Here are some important rules to remember when driving your car rental in Georgia:

  • Drives below the age of 18 can’t ride in the open bed of a pick-up on the interstate.
  • You can’t merge from the center lane.

  • 35 mph in an unpaved county road.
  • 70 mph in a rural interstate.
  • 65 mph in a multi-lane divided highway or urban interstate.
  • 55 mph in all other areas.

The heaviest traffic in Georgia can be found in its capital Atlanta, which also happens to be the 10th most congested city in the United States. Morning rush hour usually starts from 7:00 am to 9:30 am, and evening rush hour from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. 


Georgia Express lanes are optional tolls that run alongside interstates, especially in some of Atlanta’s most congested urban areas.  These include:

  • The I-75 South Metro Express Lanes
  • I-85 express lanes
  • The Northwest Corridor lanes from I-75 to Akers Mill Road to Hickory Grove Road
  • I-575 from I-75 to Sixes Road
  • The  I-85 extension from I-85 in Gwinnett County to Hamilton Mill Road
