State Speed Limits

You must not exceed the below driving speeds on your trips through Pennsylvania:

• Residential districts – 25 mph
• Urban districts – 35 mph
• Freeways – 65 mph
• Other locations – 55 mph

Speed limits are subject to change by local authorities.

The tolled Pennsylvania Turnpike runs for 360 miles, from the Ohio border to the west and to New Jersey to the east, with different designations on either side. The turnpike connects Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Philadelphia, before crossing the Appalachian Mountains through four tunnels.

• Interstate 79 (I-79) starts in Erie, and runs through Pittsburgh to West Virginia.
• Interstate 81 (I-81) connects New York, via Scranton and Harrisburg, to Maryland.
• Interstate 476 (I-476) starts north of Scranton, running south beyond Philadelphia to terminate near the Delaware border.

Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, via Harrisburg

It’s a five-hour, 300-mile drive from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. It’s a direct route, with the two cities connected by the I-76. Harrisburg is en route, about 100 miles and two hours into the journey.

Harrisburg to Gettysburg

It takes between 45 minutes and one hour to drive from Harrisburg to Gettysburg. The two cities are connected by US-15.

Harrisburg to Pittsburgh

The 200-mile drive from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh takes three hours and 15 minutes on the I-76 – the quickest route between the cities.

Gettysburg to Pittsburgh

It takes around three and a half hours to drive the 195 miles from Gettysburg to Pittsburgh. The most direct route is to follow US-30 W out of the city, then either pick up PA-997 N or continue along US-30 W – both eventually meet up with the I-76 W, which you can then follow all the way into central Pittsburgh.
