What to do in Luebeck
Holstentor
Start your trip at the Holstentor – or Holsten Gate – the iconic symbol of the city. The Holsten Gate was built in the late 1400s and is one of only two city gates surviving today. Inside, you’ll find a museum chronicling the history of the gate and discover its important role in Luebeck’s trading past. Two foreboding lion statues guard the entrance: one asleep, one awake.
Explore Luebeck Altstadt
Step into the past in Luebeck’s old town. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the ancient part of the city sits on a small island surrounded by the River Trave. Known as the City of the Seven Spires, be sure to look up as you explore. From churches dotted throughout the centuries to a warren of winding streets perfect for a day of searching for hidden charms, this is the perfect place to discover a little bit of German history.
Marienkirche church
Saint Mary’s church is the third biggest in Germany and sits at the highest point of the Old Town. The church is a striking example of the red-brick gothic style that was dreamed up here in Luebeck – a design set the standard for over 700 other churches in the region and a true taste of history. Step inside and you’ll find world’s largest mechanical organ on display, as well as the shattered parts of the broken bells which fell from the tower when it was bombed in World War One – now serving as a memorial to peace. This really is one of the most intriguing and storied buildings in all of Germany.
Travemünde beach
Fancy a day at the beach? Drive your Hertz rental car to Travemünde – it’s just a 12-mile drive from Luebeck. A popular spot with locals and visitors alike, you can take a walk along the 100-year-old promenade or recline on one of the 1,000 deckchairs dotted along the golden sands. If you’re feeling fit, climb the 142 steps to the top of the Leuchtturm Travemünde – the oldest lighthouse in Germany and just another nod to the past in historic Luebeck.
