Minneapolis is connected to the Upper Midwest and northern regions of the US by several interstates:

  • Interstate 94 (I-94) connects Saint Paul with Minneapolis and travels through the Black River State Forest in the east and Montana in the west.
  • Interstate 35W (I-35W) runs through the city center, crossing the Anthony Falls Bridge over the Mississippi River. It connects with I-35, which heads towards Kansas in the south.

Rush hour traffic starts around 7am, finishing at 9am. Roads are usually quieter during the daytime, until around 3pm, when evening commuter traffic builds up until 6pm. Plan your drives with your rental car in Minneapolis outside these times for a smoother journey.

How to Get From Minneapolis–Saint Paul Airport to Downtown

Minneapolis–Saint Paul Airport is 19 minutes and 14 miles away from central Minneapolis:

  1. Exit the Hertz facility in your Minneapolis car rental and head towards Glumack Drive.
  2. Stay right at the fork and merge onto MN-5 W/State Highway 5 W.
  3. Merge onto I-494 W, then take Exit 2B onto MN-77 N for three miles.
  4. Exit onto MN-62 W for around 1.5 miles.
  5. Use the right two lanes to enter I-35 W for 4.5 miles.
  6. Stay left at the fork, following signs for Downtown/I-94 W.
  7. Keep left and merge onto S 11 Street.
  8. Turn right onto 3 Avenue Street towards your destination.

 

How to Get From Minneapolis to Mall of America

The Mall of America is in nearby Bloomington, MN. Take the I-35W south in your rental car, then head to the MN-77 S, finally exiting at Lindau Lane to arrive in around 15 minutes.
