What is a sedan?

A sedan is a four-door passenger car that comes in a three-box design, which means that there are three separate compartments – one for the engine, one for the passengers and one for the cargo. The word ‘sedan’ has its roots in the 17^th century, from the human-powered vehicle ‘litter’, or the sedan chair. The first use of ‘sedan’ as an automobile body started in 1912, when the Studebaker Four and Studebaker Six cars were advertised as sedans.

In the mid-20^th century there were a few variantions of sedans, like sedanents, club sedans, close-coupled sedans, coach sedans, with some of them having two doors.

The standard sedan styles are:

• Liftback sedans – the back of the car lifts up using a liftgate or hatch
• Fastback sedans – with a rear long curving downward slope starting from the roof

You can drive up to 272 miles with the base rear-wheel-drive trim, up to 315 miles with the Performance and up to 358 miles with the Long Range.

The car comes with various charging options like Superchargers (Tesla's network of fast-charging stations), an adapter for DC public-charging, 240- or 120-volt outlets and home-charging stations . For those with access to a private road or who attend race days, Track mode may be another reason to go for a Model 3. By altering the split of the front and rear tourque settings and dialling down the stability control system, it gives you the possibility to drift the vehicle. At the same time, regenerative braking is increased, improving powertrain cooling.

Polestar 2

While Polestar is a realtively new brand to the automotive industry, its engineering excellence is well established as it’s owned by the same company that manufactures Volvo vehicles. Polestar 2 made its debut in 2019, with a Scandinavian chic design, Android operating system (including ‘Hey Google’ voice assistant), two battery sizes and four trims to choose from. The standard trim can reach up to 321-mile range, go from 0 to 60mph in 6.2 seconds and tow up to 3300 lbs. The Polestar 2 also comes with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) for enhanced safety.

Lucid Air

The CEO of Lucid was the main engineer behind the Tesla Model S, before he created the Lucid Air in 2021. This luxury electric car is the fastest charging and has the longest range in the world, innovating the EV industry and offering the ultimate electric driving experience. The Lucid Air features the perfect blend of sophistication and efficiency. It comes in three trims: Pure, Touring and Grand Touring. The Grand Touring has 1,050 hp, can drive up to an incredible 516 miles and reaches 60mph in 3 seconds. It takes around 12 minutes to charge 200 miles when connected to a 350 kW DC fast charger and equipped with 19” wheels. Its immersive in-car experience and instant interaction features also stand out.

BMW i4

This premium car released in 2021 brings a unique approach to electric driving, combining contemporary technology with classic BMW brand traits. The i4 has one of the best interior and infotainment systems on the market for a more prestigious driving experience. There are two versions available to choose from: the eDrive40 which offers rear-wheel drive and a range of up to 367 miles and 335 bhp, or the M40 (the first ever all-electric M-car) with twin-motor AWD (all-wheel drive), a range of up to 290 miles and 537 bhp. The i4 features the same Gen5 BMW electric drive tech, but without the part-carbon build of the iX.

Mercedes EQS Sedan

The German manufacturer released the EQS Sedan in 2021 as the electric equivalent of the S-Class. Its exterior is elegantly sleek and the spacious interior is made of luxurious leather for maximum comfort. The EQS sedan is about futuristic driving, with tech specs like the MBUX Augmented Reality Head-up Display and the MBUX Interior Assistant. The huge 108kWh battery provides an impressive driving range of up to 453 miles and the performance output reaches 333 bhp. It takes approximately 31 minutes to charge the battery to 80% at a rapid charging station. Compared to the above models, the EQS sedan falls onto the pricey side, however the power and gadgets make up for it.
