The main roads into and out of Melbourne include:

  • M31 Hume Freeway – Connects Melbourne to Sydney in the northeast.
  • M1 Princes Freeway – Runs from Melbourne towards Geelong and the southwest.
  • M8 Western Freeway – Connects Melbourne to the west.

Traveling from Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) to Melbourne’s CBD should take roughly 20 minutes (21km) in your car rental. However, this depends on traffic and the route you take. Travel via Bulla Rd/State Route 37 is toll-free, but following these instructions is the fastest way.

  1. Get on Tullamarine Fwy/M2 in Westmeadows.
  2. Follow M2 to Flemington Rd/A60/State Route 60 in Parkville. Take Exit 7 from M2.
  3. Follow Flemington Rd to Elizabeth St in Melbourne.
