Whether you're renting a car for business or leisure holiday, we are here to answer your questions and ensure that you have a seamless payment experience. Let's explore some of the common inquiries regarding payment options for Hertz car rentals.

What Payment Methods Are Accepted?

Hertz accepts many credit cards from major financial institutions such as:

  • American Express
  • MasterCard
  • Carte Blanche
  • Discover
  • Visa, Diners Club
  • JCB
  • China Union Pay

When you make a rental car reservation with Hertz using a credit card, it's important to be aware that an authorized hold will be placed on your payment. This hold serves to cover the approximate rental charges, along with an additional amount of $200.00 to account for any potential additional costs that may arise during your rental period. It's essential to note that these funds will not be available for your personal use until the hold is released.

Ensure the card you're using bears the Visa, MasterCard, or Discover logo. Furthermore, the debit card must be capable of drawing funds directly from the cardholder's account. It's important to note that when picking up your car rental vehicle from an airport location, additional requirements apply. In addition to presenting two forms of identification, you will also need to provide proof of return travel.

If you're planning to pick up your rental car from a Hertz Local Edition (HLE) location, you'll be pleased to know that debit cards can also be used for payment at the start of the rental period. To take advantage of this option, it's important to make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance of your desired pick-up date and time. Additionally, it's worth noting that the renter must be at least 25 years old to qualify for renting a car with a debit card at Hertz Local Edition

There are some exceptions where a debit card cannot be used. A debit card may not be used in the following locations when you begin your rental:

  • New York Metropolitan Tri-State
  • Hartford, CT
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Boston, MA
  • Manchester, NH
  • Detroit, MI
  • Baltimore, MD
  • Atlanta, GA

Debit cards are also not accepted for rentals within the Dream Cars ® and Shelby GT-H range.

What is Accepted as Proof of Identification?

You must present a valid driver's license with a photo as primary ID, however there may be some further documentation needed, such as:

  • Proof of address – this could be a phone or utility bill that confirms your full name and current address. This information must match with your driver’s license.
  • A valid US passport or US military ID card – the name on this document must match your driver’s license.
  • Proof of insurance – this is often requested if using a debit card to pay.
  • ·A return plane ticket or proof of travel itinerary for your return trip - this is often requested at airport pick-up locations.

In some cases, a quick credit check will be carried out at the start of your car rental to ensure that you have sufficient funds. It’s crucial to pack the requested documents in preparation for your rental car pick-up.

Can You Use Someone Else’s Credit Card?

No, you must use a credit card that’s registered to the main driver to rent a car. This is due to the legal responsibility the driver has after signing the rental agreement on pick-up.

You will have to present your driver’s license when picking up your car rental and checks will be made at this stage to see if the credit card name matches the name on your driver’s license. Address checks will also be carried out between the credit card and the presented driver’s license. These details must match for the car rental to be permitted.

Can You Use a Non-US Credit Card?

Yes, you can use a non-US credit card and it's usually straightforward. If your credit card is registered to an institution outside of the US, the full amount will be automatically converted to the account’s currency.

Sometimes you can request the card issuer to carry out a conversion based on other conversion rates. This will require written correspondence in advance so that your credit card company has time to act. Doing this may incur a small fee that is based on a percentage of the amount converted, but this replaces the standard conversion fee charged by the credit card issuer.

Can You Prepay for Your Reservation?

When booking in advance, Hertz offers a handy Pay Now and Save option from certain pickup locations. Choosing this option will allow you to enjoy a discount. You’ll also enjoy increased flexibility, as you can amend or extend your booking within 24 hours of confirmation at no further cost.

If you select the prepay option, you’ll need to present the same payment method that was originally used online. Failure to do so may result in you having to rebook your rental car on arrival which will be at a higher cost than the original prepaid amount.

Book now, pay later car rental is often slightly more expensive than prepay reservation, which makes it a consideration when looking for a better deal. However, if you want to pay upfront, it’s worth making sure that your travel plans will not change as there’s usually a short window for you to change your booking. If you wish to make changes to your booking later on or cancel completely, you will often be charged. Charges will also be incurred if you return the rental car late or do not adhere to your mileage and fuel estimation.
