With more zero-emission, electric vehicles available than ever it’s the perfect time to consider one for your next trip. But, there’s a lot to learn. Buckle up as we take a ride through the world of Volvo electric cars.

Who is Volvo?

Volvo has its roots in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a history of producing luxury motors. In 1927, their first-ever car was unveiled. Since then, they’ve become a globally recognized brand. In 2019, Volvo committed to putting one million electric cars on the road by 2025 and ensured every new model would have an electric motor. This means their range of EV and hybrid models is growing year-on-year.

Volvo tends to focus on high-quality, practical and stylish EVs that are highly suited to urban driving, though some models offer all-wheel drive which makes them highly versatile off-road too. These could be perfect for hobbyists, families, businesses or any occasion that requires reasonable luggage space.

Volvo XC40 Recharge

The Volvo XC40 Recharge was Volvo’s first step into the all-electric vehicle market – though with great range, a beautiful design, and a positive reception you might call it a big stride forward instead. 

This Volvo electric compact SUV comes packed with great specs and performance, with a mile range capable of long hauls and city trips while remaining fully electric. At a glance, the XC40 offers:

• 57 cu ft of trunk capacity – this means plenty of room for luggage, with a sleek front-load compartment as well.
• 402 horsepower – by using the twin motor, you can expect incredible performance on hills or highways. That’s 0-60 mph in 4.7s.
• 233-mile range – thanks to the twin motor and additional power, you can expect to go further on less.

The XC40 is going to continue in Volvo’s range of all-electric vehicles, building on its presence in the compact SUV space.

If you’re looking for an economical and sizeable-yet-sleek SUV, the XC40 Recharge may be for you.

Volvo C40 Recharge

The Volvo C40 Recharge pure electric vehicle was announced following the XC40 in 2021. However, unlike its predecessor the C40, the XC40 is available exclusively as a crossover SUV EV. This means it’s built with electric driving in mind from the ground up – we’re talking great battery storage, range, and an easier time maneuvering in smaller spaces.

This five-seat, five-door offers a range of great specs including:

• 14.5 cu ft of trunk capacity –  that means you’ve got room for suitcases and then some.
• 226-mile range – expect to go the distance with the additional power and efficiency from the twin motor.
• 402 horsepower – with more power than its single-motor version, you can expect 0-60 mph in 4.5s.

Further trims are available, offering changes to wheel size, infotainment, finishes, and connectivity.

While the C40 Recharge is relatively new to the market, you can expect Volvo to iterate on the model and bring new versions to the market as time goes on.

Volvo EX90

Where the Volvo C40 and XC40 are compact, crossover SUVs, the EX90 is the true, full-size SUV of the Volvo family. Volvo’s new EV SUV is set to replace the XC90, and intended to be their new flagship SUV when it’s released in 2024. With seven seats, no one gets left behind in this car.

The baseline vehicle doesn’t just offer plenty of space, the twin motor produces some seriously impressive results. Specs include:

• 496 horsepower – that translates to an acceleration time of 5.7s, from 0-60mph.
• 300-mile range – with such an impressive range for it’s size, the EX90 is incredible for trips and adventures out of the city.
• ·67.6 cu ft trunk capacity – with the rear chairs down, you can expect some serious space to store everything you might need on your adventure.

For those looking for a full-size SUV, with enough power to go the distance, the EX90 is an attractive offering.

Volvo XC90 Plug-in Hybrid

While Volvo electric cars offer some great range, and its models are stylish, competitive, efficient and economical, drivers may still want to stick with something more familiar. The XC90 is full-size plug-in hybrid SUV, meaning the fuel efficiency of its internal combustion engine is boosted by an electric motor. Plug-in hybrids are able to recharge both while the car is in motion and using a charging cable. This means you can drive in a pure electric mode for short hauls, and rely on fuel for longer journeys.

At a glance, the specs look like this:

• 455 horsepower – Taking only 5 seconds to get from 0-60 mph, the XC90 is fast for its size.
• 35-mile range – While you may not want to go adventuring in the pure electric mode, it’s excellent for short journeys.
• 66.2 cu ft trunk capacity – with the rear chairs folded, you’re looking at unparalleled storage.

While Volvo is looking to stop selling combustion vehicles, they will continue to support the hybrid XC90. However, pure electric alternatives such as the EX90 are in production.

For those not ready to jump to an electric SUV, the XC90 is a great place to start.

Volvo S90 Plug-in Hybrid

For a plug-in hybrid better suited to city breaks, the S90 Recharge is a great option. This luxury saloon has been on the market since 2016 and has seen several versions since. The S90 Recharge brings that style to a plug-in hybrid platform.

While it may be luxurious, it doesn’t scrimp on specs:

• 455 horsepower – This luxury saloon has plenty of power to complement its style.
• 38 mile range – A plug-in hybrid’s range may not compete with a full electric vehicle, but it’s great for getting you around town a few times.
• 13.5 cu ft trunk capacity – While the S90 is slimmer than an SUV, you’ve still got plenty of space for most ventures.

Despite Volvo’s commitment to electric cars and the rise of SUVs, the S90 is looking to remain on the agenda for future production and renewals.

If you’re looking for an efficient and economical saloon, but don’t want to go full electric just yet, the S90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid could be a perfect middle ground.

Volvo V60 Recharge

If you’re planning a trip that involves the whole family, the Volvo V60 Recharge has room for anything life throws your way. This 5-door, 5-seat station wagon is ideal for those that need a little extra leg room on their journey. Unlike many station wagons, the Volvo delivers some excellent style in its design. While not a fully electric car like other Volvo models, it has an electric mode and offers reduced emissions thanks to its hybrid nature.

It’s also stacked with technology, and comes with some enviable specs:

• 455 horsepower – Even on highways, you have enough power in this estate if you decide to go a bit further afield. You can expect 0-60 in 4.3s, helping you get up to speed swiftly.
• 41 miles range – The electric-only mode can help you get around town if needed.
• 22.9 cu ft trunk capacity – With the seats up, you’re looking at sizeable trunk capacity for those big trips.

Volvo seems to remain committed to including the V60 in its lineup. With Volvo’s goal of making more of their vehicles electric, we may see the V60 join Volvo’s range of fully electric cars in the not-too-distant future .
