All about Hyundai

Hyundai has been a market leader in cutting-edge vehicle design and technology since its inception in South Korea in 1967. However, the roots of the company go back to 1947 when the car company tried to help South Korea rebuild after WWII. After becoming the Hyundai Motor Company, the brand launched its first car, the Cortina, in partnership with Ford.

The success of this model led Hyundai founder Chung Ju-Yung to create South Korea’s first mass-produced car in 1976: the Pony. Since then, Hyundai has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers – including an array of world-beating EVs.

Hyundai’s electric cars first came on the market after years of extensive research into the future of motoring and sustainability. The Hyundai BlueOn launched in Seoul in 2010 and was sold exclusively in South Korea. From there, Hyundai produced successful hybrids such as the Sonata in 2011 and the IONIQ in 2016.

The Hyundai IONIQ is one of the world’s most successful electric vehicles, offering separate hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric capabilities to drivers in 2016. Following the success of this sleek sedan, the world welcomed the first Hyundai electric SUV in 2018: the Kona Electric.

Hyundai IONIQ

Hyundai TUCSON plug-in hybrid

The Hyundai Tucson started life as a conventional gas car in 2004 to sit below the Santa Fe in its range of SUVs. However, fast-forward to 2018 and this popular compact SUV had been given the hybrid treatment.

The Tucson quickly became Hyundai’s best-selling SUV model, making the need for a hybrid version very clear. With a rugged, sporty exterior and powerful engine capabilities, this plug-in hybrid filled a gap in the market for robust SUVs with electric capabilities.

The Hyundai NEXO is a crossover SUV that is entirely powered by hydrogen and was launched in 2018. While not strictly one of Hyundai’s electric vehicles, the Hyundai NEXO is still part of its impressive zero-emissions collection of cars.

Future Hyundai models

Hyundai IONIQ 7

As part of Hyundai’s ambition to release 17 further electric vehicles by 2030, the brand has announced plans for an IONIQ 7 for release in 2024.

Genesis EVs

Hyundai’s sister brand, Genesis, is included in its ambitious plans. There are reportedly six EVs to be released under Genesis as part of their scope, with every new model being an electric vehicle from 2025.
