History of Chevrolet and electric vehicles

GM (the company that owns Chevrolet) revealed its first EV model in 1996 and it quickly gained popularity despite the early technology not lending itself to the best speed or range. Due to high building costs, it was discontinued, but it paved the way for the future of electric vehicles at GM and Chevrolet.

Unfortunately, consumers were still not convinced and electric cars experienced a downturn in the 1990s.

Chevrolet introduced the Mi-Ray model in 2011 at the Seoul Motor Show, and it paved the way for their hybrid models today. The revolutionary design could charge its battery through regenerative braking and power its front wheels using solely electric power.

This success led the brand to apply this model to new hybrid designs, like the 2016 Chevy Malibu and Volt. The Malibu was designed to maximise the efficiency of the vehicle’s gas engine, but the Volt aimed to minimize gas usage and rely on electricity.

Is the Chevrolet Spark electric?

The first all-electric car produced by Chevy since the mid-90s was the Spark EV, released in 2015. Each model came with a DC Smart Charging option, which meant that you could charge it to 80 percent in 20-minutes. It also boasted seamless acceleration and powerful torque.

Chevrolet is committed to an all-electric future. GM has plans in place to phase out internal combustion vehicles by 2035.

Electric Chevrolet models

1. Chevrolet Bolt EV

Chevrolet has given their 2016 Bolt a makeover with this new 2023 EV model. Sitting as the most inexpensive electric vehicle sold in the US as of 2023, it’s a brilliant accessible alternative to some of the more premium names and models on the market – like the Tesla Model 3 or Hyundai Kona EV.

The Chevy Bolt EV comes in two different models, the 1LT and the 2LT. The 2LT contains the same package as the 1LT trim, but also adds some luxury qualities to its mix including leather seats, rear center armrest and HD Surround Vision camera.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV boasts the following specifications:

• 259 miles electric range on a full charge.
• 57 cubic feet of max cargo volume.
• 200 horsepower.

It’s competitive in the market for its price, swapping one-charge technology and all-wheel drive in favor of a more spacious interior.

2. Chevrolet Bolt EUV

The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is the SUV version of the Chevrolet Bolt EV hatchback. It’s larger than its sister model but has slightly less range. It retains the budget friendly qualities that you know and love from Chevy and boasts a spacious cabin and fun drive.

One of the best value EVs  on the market, the Chevy Bolt EUV combines high-quality, great value, state-of-the-art technology and respectable driving range.

A Chevrolet Bolt EUV can offer the following specifications:

• 247 miles electric range on a full charge.
• 56.9 cubic feet of max cargo volume.
• 200 horsepower.

This all-electric SUV is a great family car, suitable for long rides and city commutes. While it’s an affordable option, it does not charge as quicky as market rivals and cannot offer all-wheel drive. It has a lower range than its sister hatchback EV but it’s competitive against the Volkswagen ID.4 and Hyundai Kona Electric.

As part of Chevrolet’s mission to move to all-electric vehicles, there are three more models in the  family that haven’t been released to the market yet. These are:

3. Chevrolet Silverado EV

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV will be available Fall 2023. The revolutionary Silverado electric truck offers E-4WD and can deliver torque to all four wheels instantaneously. You can even adjust the height of the truck.

At release, it’ll be available in Work Truck and loaded RST trims, but more trims will be released over time. Like the gas-powered Silverado, this EV will become available in an off-road model called Trail Boss.

You can enjoy the following specifications from your electric Chevrolet Silverado EV:

• 400 miles of all-electric range on full charge.
• 785 lb.-ft. of torque and 754 horsepower.
• Ability to tow up to 10,000 [JA(S13] lbs.

When it’s released, the Chevrolet Silverado EV will compete with the Tesla Cybertruck and Ford F-150 Lightning.

4. Chevrolet Blazer EV

The Chevrolet Blazer electric model is a new electric SUV, estimated to be released in summer 2023. This new mid-size SUV will be available in a number of trims, colors and battery ranges. Built with the Ultium battery platform, a game-changing battery technology, expect flexible charging speeds and performance.

Enjoy the following specifications with an electric Chevrolet Blazer:

• Get up to 320 miles on a full charge.
• Up to 557 horsepower and 648 lb-ft of torque.
• 17.7-inch diagonal display screen.

The Chevy Blazer EV will compete against the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E . While the Chevrolet Blazer is just as quick in terms of acceleration as the Tesla Model Y and both models have well-equipped cabins, the price of the Chevy is much more competitive.

5. Chevrolet Equinox EV

The 2024 Equinox EV from Chevy is a sporty yet affordable electric SUV. Enjoy premium technology, including a 17-inch driver-centric display and personalized ambient lighting inside this sleek and modern vehicle. You can enjoy nearly instant electric torque with Ultium Platform technology.

The 2RS trim will be available in fall 2023 – featuring a heated flat bottom steering wheel and 20inch dark aero wheels – but the rest of the full range will be released by Spring 2024.

The Chevy Equinox EV comes with:

• up to 300 miles electric range on a full charge.
• 70 miles of range after 10 minutes of charging.
• 17.7-inch Diagonal Freeform display screen.

The next most affordable electric crossover to the Equinox EV is the Volkswagen ID.4. This model has two battery pack options and price levels.
