What is a Grand Tourer/GT?

Borrowed originally from the Italian phrase Gran Tourismo, a Grand Tourer or GT embodies many of the elements of a sports car without compromising on comfort over capability. Generally offering seating for two or more, GT cars are designed to be functional, as well as dynamic with a chassis and suspension that operate well in the real world.

Suited as well to long-distance driving as they are short sprints, the engines in GTs work to maintain maximum performance over extended periods.

From the start of this decade, electric GT and hybrid GT models have been appearing and gaining favor with those who want a serious drive, but are conscious of sustainability. Performance and practicality go hand in hand, meaning electric GTs work well for couples wanting to hit the open road and travel in style.

Audi e-tron GT

First released in 2021, the spectacular looks and performance of the e-tron GT have made it one of the most desirable luxury saloons available in the EV space. This four-door coupe/saloon drives with the signature smoothness associated with the Audi brand and is also available in the RS version with its performance-enhancing exterior.

The 2023 e-tron boasts a luxurious interior with a high-end infotainment system and a comfortable cabin equipped with climate control. When it comes to driving, this Audi electric GT refreshingly handles with a light and agile feel, with its air suspension confidently negating any bumps.

An Audi e-tron GT can offer the following specifications:

  • 522 horsepower (637 hp for RS version)
  • 93 kWh battery size
  • 0-60mph in 3.9 sec (with boost engaged)

Ford Mustang Mach-E GT

An early entry into the GT electric market in late 2020, the Mustang Mach-E GT is a typically powerful car in the Ford tradition, with the bonus of a decent range from a single charge. Despite being a relatively heavy vehicle, the Mach-E handles well around bends and the adaptive suspension and lower ride height in this Ford electric GT make it a solid drive. Plenty of head/leg room is afforded within the cabin, which comes equipped with a huge 15.5-inch infotainment screen that is both responsive and logical.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT offers the following specifications:

  • 310-mile range on a full charge
  • 88kwh battery capacity
  • 487 bhp
  • 0-60 in 4.4 sec

In comparison to the stronger, safer feel of the Audi e-tron, the Mach-E GT may feel a little too playful for some. However, the excellent range of this EV makes it a strong contender in the GT field.

KIA EV 6 GT

Released in 2022, the Kia EV 6 GT, is making its mark due to its vaunted top speeds and lithe handling. That’s not to mention its bold look and interior design that includes a digitized dashboard and some refreshing practical elements like its floating center console. Copious rear leg room is another bonus, giving this Kia electric GT the ability to transport five passengers in comfort.

The Kia EV 6 GT offers the following specifications:

  • 77.4 kWh battery capacity
  • 577 bhp
  • 480 liters luggage capacity
  • Range of 230 miles on a fully charged battery

As one of the most powerful Kia’s on the market, the EV6 offers both great performance and comfort, the key ingredients to any Grand Tourer. It may not offer the true sports car experience of the Porsche Taycan GTS, however, as an entry into this world it’s an unquestionably solid, rewarding drive.

Porsche Taycan GTS

The Porsche lineage is strong in their Taycan GTS, an electric vehicle that firmly focuses on vehicle dynamics and overall style giving the driver the ultimate sports performance. Arriving at the beginning of 2021, this premium Porsche electric GT handles exactly as you would hope from the brand and has the added benefit of charging quickly. The interior is tech-laden with a curved 16.8-inch display and two additional touch screens to operate both the infotainment and climate-setting functions.

The Porsche Taycan GTS can offer the following specifications:

  • 0-60 mph in 3.7 sec
  • top speed of 155 mph
  • 270 kW fast charger
  • 246-mile range on a full charge

For those looking for an electric GT that’s a true sports car at heart, the Porsche Taycan GTS fits the bill perfectly. However, with a lower range than the Ford Mustang Mach-E, it may not sit as the first choice for those looking for longer touring.

Maserati Levante GT Hybrid

The GT Hybrid, launched at the end of 2022, instantly wows by maintaining its grille and iconic trident badge of the Levante range. Its 48V mild hybrid engine helps add extra thrust to its 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. With regenerated power from deceleration, or cruising stored in the battery, this car has reduced emissions and can handle dynamically so cornering is a breeze.

The Maserati Levante GT Hybrid offers the following specifications:

  • 330 horsepower
  • 580-liter trunk space
  • 152 mph max speed
  • 0-60 mph in 6.0 sec

As a way of dipping your toe into the EV space, the Maserati electric GT model offers all you need and more, plus it will draw people in with its excellent ride quality. Nonetheless, as a truly sustainable car, it inevitably doesn’t stack up against cars like the Audi e-tron GT.

Choosing to switch to an EV or hybrid vehicle doesn’t need to come with any sacrifice in terms of driving enjoyment thanks to the excellent range of electric GT models available. Performance is at a premium at the greener end of the market, and an adventurous lifestyle awaits.
