Massachusetts Car Rental FAQs

Massachusetts is well-connected by interstates, so you can take your rental car far and wide. Some of the most important are:

  • Interstate (I-90) starts in Boston and runs west to Seattle, Washington. In Massachusetts, it’s a toll highway known as the Massachusetts Turnpike.
  • Interstate 91 (I-91) starts on New England’s border with Canada, and concludes in New Haven, Connecticut, via Springfield in Massachusetts.
  • Interstate 95 (I-95) runs north-south for 91 miles, entering Massachusetts from Rhode Island before exiting into New Hampshire.
  • Interstate 495 (I-495), a Blue Star Memorial Highway, branches off I-95 in the northeast corner of Massachusetts, taking a wide route around Boston, before concluding in the south-eastern point of the state.

  • Right of way. You must give way at stop signs, T-intersections, and three-way and four-way stop signs (to the car that appeared at the intersection first). When turning left, you need to yield the right of way to approaching vehicles).
  • Headlights. All vehicles must have lights on in snow, fog or icy conditions from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise. You also need them on when going through a tunnel.
  • Driving with a cell phone. You should only use hands-free devices while driving.
