Joseph Sylvia State Beach

This two-mile-long sandy beach between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs is one of the most popular on the island. It was the main filming location for Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and it’s here that you can visit the ‘Jaws Bridge’ which features in one of the most famous scenes.

Aquinnah Cliffs

On the opposite side of the island, you can visit these striking clay cliffs which were formed millions of years ago. Follow the beach path to look up at this spectacular sight or head to the upper trails to take in incredible views. While here, you’ll see the Gay Head Lighthouse. 

Flying Horses Carousel

15 Oak Bluffs Avenue, Oak Bluffs, MA, 02557

Dating back to the 1870s, this is the oldest platform carousel in the country. It was formerly situated at Coney Island before moving to Oak Bluffs in the 1880s. Today it’s a National Historic Landmark and the 20 hand-painted wooden horses still entertain children and adults alike.

Lucky Hank’s, which is named after a character from the owner’s favorite book, serves up homemade comfort food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Driving In and Around Martha’s Vineyard

  • Philbin Beach Parking (02535) is close to Aquinnah Public Beach. Park your Martha’s Vineyard rental car and travel just a short distance to Aquinnah Cliffs Overlook and Gay Head Lighthouse.
  • On-street parking in Oak Bluffs (02557) offers easy access to the Flying Horses Carousel, The Gingerbread Houses and Oak Bluffs Town Beach.
  • The Triangle (02539) is close to Edgartown where you can leave your Martha’s Vineyard rental car and visit Lighthouse Beach as well as the Chappaquiddick.

 

  • State Road begins at Aquinnah in the west of the island, passes through West Tisbury and continues up to Vineyard Haven in the north.
  • Edgartown – West Tisbury Road takes you through the center of Martha’s Vineyard, from Edgartown to West Tisbury, via the airport.
  • Edgartown – Vineyard Haven Road is on the east side of the island and travels from Edgartown towards Vineyard Haven in the north, passing Oak Bluffs.

 

How to Get to Oak Bluffs From Martha’s Vineyard Airport by Rental Car

It takes around 15 minutes to drive the seven miles from Martha’s Vineyard by rental car to Oak Bluffs.

  1. Leave the Martha’s Vineyard Airport car rental parking lot via Airport Road and then turn right on to Edgartown – West Tisbury Road.
  2. Take the first left to join Barnes Road and then keep following this road until it becomes Wing Road. 
  3. Turn left on to Shawmut Avenue and then right on to Vineyard Avenue.
  4. Take a left to join Dukes County Avenue and this will lead you to the center of Oaks Bluff, close to the famous Gingerbread Houses.

 

How to Get to Edgartown From Martha’s Vineyard Airport by Rental Car

Edgartown is just a 10-minute drive in your rental car from Martha’s Vineyard Airport. Just head east on Edgartown – West Tisbury Road which will take you to the neighborhood. Turn right on Cooke Street to arrive at the coastline.
