Mazda’s story might not begin as you’d imagine – it was founded in 1920, initially focused on producing cork products under the name Toyo Cork Kogyo. In the company’s home city of Hiroshima, production eventually shifted to producing its first vehicle in 1931, the Mazda-Go. Although focused primarily on practicality and affordability, this three-wheeled truck was fully engineered in-house and led the way with its rear differential and reverse gear.
Success was further cemented in 1936 following the Kagoshima-Tokyo Caravan Campaign, where four Mazda-Go trucks proved their endurance by covering over 1,600 miles in 25 days.
Mazda successfully perfected its truck designs, with innovation initially being born out of difficulties sourcing materials after World War II. Mazda’s first passenger car, the R360 Coupe, launched in 1960. Its impressive fuel economy and small design made it ideal for citizens who wanted to get on the road.
Since then, Mazda has continually pushed the boundaries of innovation and engineering prowess. In 1991, Mazda’s legendary rotary-powered 787B won the coveted 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, making it the first Japanese-manufactured car to win the event. This level of ingenuity is found in its standard road vehicles today, with the manufacturer seeing further success in the 1990s with its iconic roadster, the MX-5.
