For Art and Wine Lovers: Les Chartrons

Les Chartrons is ideal for those who know how to mix culture and socializing. There is so much to do in this area, that it can be a challenge to know where to begin. Take a stroll through the CAPC, the contemporary art museum, where you can while away a few hours before heading to the Jardin Botanique and taking in some gorgeous views. If history is your thing, head south slightly to Old Town Bordeaux to see some amazing architecture. At night, enjoy the bustling atmosphere of the many bars and restaurants.

For Old-School Bordeaux: Saint Pierre

Saint Pierre is a heady mix of urban modernity and medieval history. There are townhouses dating back to Louis XV, with some restored to create a style all its own, along with paved courtyards where locals gather in front of cafes and Rococo fountains. Old churches are dotted around and there is a complete warren of rickety streets and charming squares. Place de la Victoire is the best place to go at night – locals and tourists alike gather here to soak up the lively surroundings. 

For Cosmopolitan Cuisine: Saint Michel

Saint Michel has had a rejuvenation recently and is now one of the most popular places to live. It is less glamorous than other spots, but that is what makes it so charming. The natives of Saint Michel make it what it is, and it is a very diverse neighborhood – check out the Capucins Bordeaux, the fabulous market, the Basilique Sant-Michel and we recommend the best bakery in town - simply named La Boulangerie. A wonderful place to head for something a little different and more relaxed than other neighborhoods. 

For Luxury Shopping Galore: Golden Triangle

After the more casual neighborhood of Saint Michel, visit the Golden Triangle and see the glamorous side of Bordeaux. Designer shops and luxury hotels rub shoulders with celebrity restaurants – try and get a table at Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant, Le Pressoir d’Argent, to experience truly marvelous cuisine. There are also plenty of small coffee shops and cafes to rest in – check out the gorgeous buildings in the triangle while you sit and people-watch along with the locals. This small area is the true heart of Bordeaux and is not to be missed.

For a Dose of Nature: Le Lac

Set your compass north for a peaceful refuge from the city rush. As its name suggests, this district is famous for its shimmering lake surrounded by lush greenery, glades, and woods. It’s lovingly nicknamed ‘Bordeaux’s Garden’ and is perfect if you’re looking for the great outdoors on a Bordeaux family holiday.

There’s a forest thick with wild nature trails and crystal-clear streams, a four-star international camp site, a sailing and rowing club, golf course, and a new stadium. The city is exceptionally bicycle-friendly, and this is one of the best places to visit in Bordeaux to cycle around. If you start missing the urban buzz, it’s just a short drive back into the center.

For Time-Warping Buildings: Vieux Bordeaux

Step back in time by heading to this historical district. One of the pleasures of staying in this area is being able to wake up in one of France’s best-preserved sectors. There’s something for everyone, particularly architecture fans, who’ll be happy getting snaps of the striking Eglise Saint-Pierre.

Take one of the guided tours if you can. They do get busy, so make sure to book in advance. The history is unique and will include the medieval city gate of Porte Cailhau. Stroll by the cafes and stop for a macchiato before exploring the Château Sainte Colombe in Côtes de Castillon, where, if you’re not driving, you can sample the best wine in Vieux Bordeaux. Bargain hunters will love the bric-a-brac on market days here, while night owls can lap up the energy of Capucins market.

For the Future of Bordeaux: Bassins à Flot

Cité du Vin – which should be sitting at the top of your to-do list – is the primary reason culture vultures flock to Bassins à Flot. The fabulously unique wine museum is more than just a beautiful bit of architecture. Within its curved exterior you’ll find exhibitions, shows, tastings, movie projections, and academic seminars.

Just like its neighbors, Bassins à Flot has had a makeover in recent years. Dive into the Base Sous-Marine to watch a concert in a World War II bunker, grab brunch at hip-and-happening Les Tontons, or join the throng of Bordeaux tours by the Garonne. It’s simple to explore Bordeaux’s neighborhoods, and a perfect way to sample the French art de vivre like a true local.
