The minimum age to rent a car in Hawaii is 20, although local drivers can be on the road from 17. You will need to be aged 23 or over if you want to rent a pick-up truck in Hawaii.

Drivers aged 25 or under will have a Young Driver surcharge added to the standard cost of car rental in Honolulu. This fee is added as protection from risk assumed by Hertz.

If you are aged under 25, certain car rental ranges are off-limits. These include vehicles from the Dream Car range, the Prestige range and the Adrenaline Collection. However, there may be some sports cars available for rent to young drivers – please ask at the time of booking to see what’s available.

Whatever age you are, you will need your driver’s license, a credit card in the same name, and another form of ID to collect your Hertz car rental in Honolulu. Non-US citizens will need their secondary form of ID to be a passport.

There are several key local driving laws in Hawaii that you should be aware of before you collect your rental car.

The speed limit in Hawaii can vary from 25mph on residential roads to 60mph on urban freeways. Pay attention to signs to ensure you know the limit – excessive speeding (classed as 30mph or more over the limit) can result in a fine of up to $1,000, suspension of your license and up to 30 days in jail.

Children aged up to seven are required by law to be in an appropriate infant or booster seat – Hertz offers a range of child seats and booster seats that can be added to your booking at the time of reservation.

State laws require drivers to turn lights on at least 30 minutes before sunset and off no earlier than 30 minutes after sunrise.

You should find it fairly easy to drive around Honolulu. Roads tend to stay uncongested most of the time. However, weather conditions can affect the ease of your drive. Bear in mind the island is occasionally hit by tropical storms, so keep an ear out for warnings before driving. October to April is the rainy season where roads may be slippery, and June to August can be hot and dry, so be sure to take plenty of drinking water with you.
