There's something magical about being dwarfed by tall trees towering over everyone and everything. Our national parks are bursting with some of the nation’s biggest beauties. Get the most out of your visit to see some of the tallest trees in the world at Sequoia National Forest. Make sure you check out these unmissable sights and learn some helpful tips for your trip.

Giant Sequoias

California is home to the gigantic sequoia tree - the namesake of Sequoia National Forest. These amazing species can grow to heights of 300 feet or more. Some of the most impressive trees in the family are more than 2,000 years old. Nature’s ancient wonders, alive in the present day.

Muir Grove

Looking for a peaceful day out? Make the trek to Muir Grove, a mid-sized grove with less foot traffic than the more popular groves. Enjoy a unique view that spans the creek gorge and covers a dense span of some of the tallest trees for miles. Enjoy the tranquillity that comes from getting away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds.

Tokopah Falls

The view from near Tokopah Falls is remarkable – breathe in the clean air and enjoy nature’s unspoiled beauty. Take a walk beyond Marble Fork Bridge in Lodgepole Campground to get there in less than 3km (two miles). Your reward includes granite cliffs and a crystal-clear waterfall. Be sure to keep small children away from the edge - this is also a useful tip for those who may be a little afraid of heights.

Trail Rides

For a more rustic experience, try taking a horse, mule, or llama to the most popular park spots. Sequoia National Park not only allows you to bring your own ride (with a permit), but the park also offers guided trail rides. These are complete with horses accustomed to navigating the trails through the large trees. Trekking your way through a national treasure by horseback takes the load off your feet and adds a sense of adventure to the experience.

Boole Tree

Measuring 113 feet across, and more than 168 feet tall, the Boole Tree is the sixth-largest tree in the world. It's located in what is now the separately maintained Sequoia National Forest system and is named after Franklin A Boole, a Fresno logger who spared the tree due to its impressive size.

Kings Canyon Park

If seeing many trees at once is your desire, a trip to Kings Canyon Park is ideal. The sequoia grove there has a higher concentration of older, larger trees than other parks. And the amazing view from Grant Grove allows visitors to photograph the 90-acre stretch with ease. Why not snap some Instagram-worthy shots to share with your friends and family? Satisfy your wanderlust with this park and make memories that will last a lifetime.

General Sherman

Kings Canyon is also home to the world's tallest sequoia — General Sherman. It lives among five of the ten largest trees worldwide in an area called General Grant Grove. Shared by King's Canyon Park and Sequoia National Park, the National Park Service take care of maintenance here.

Camping

Tent, cabin, and RV camping are popular ways to experience these giants, but make sure you take precautions and ensure everyone’s safety. Always examine your surroundings (including branches overhead) to avoid injury from dead trees or hanging branches falling. You must report dangerous conditions to a park ranger.

Sequoia vs. Redwood

The Giant Sequoia (also known as a Sierra Redwood) and the California Redwood are often mistaken as being the same tree – they’re not. They are two different species of trees. Sequoias grow faster and are only found on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada range, whilst Redwoods grow taller overall.
