Ford vs Ferrari

The most iconic of them all, Ford vs Ferrari at Le Mans, became the stuff of legend in the 1960s. The story was so gripping that it inspired the film Le Mans ’66 (also titled Ford v Ferrari), starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale.

Ferrari had dominated Le Mans in the early ’60s, while Ford struggled to compete. After a failed attempt to buy Ferrari, Henry Ford II decided to beat them on the track instead. The result? The GT40—a racing icon built for revenge.

In 1966, Ford’s efforts paid off. Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon led a dramatic 1-2-3 Ford finish, ending Ferrari’s reign. The rivalry didn’t just change the course of the race - it changed motorsport history.

Peugeot vs Audi

In the early 2000s, Audi ruled Le Mans with the R8 and later the diesel-powered R10. But in 2007, Peugeot launched a serious challenge with the 908 HDi FAP. Their endurance duel hit full throttle in 2009, when Peugeot finally toppled Audi with a win led by David Brabham, Marc Gené, and Alexander Wurz.

Though Audi would regain dominance, this chapter proved that new challengers could disrupt even the strongest dynasties.

Toyota vs Porsche

This modern Le Mans rivalry between Toyota and Porsche was one for the ages. From 2014 to 2017, both teams fought for supremacy in the LMP1 class (now Hypercar).

In 2017, Toyota had more race wins, but Porsche clinched both the World Endurance Championship and the Le Mans victory. It was a battle of speed, stamina, and strategy—one still remembered for its intensity and mutual respect.

Porsche 917 vs Ferrari 512

After losing to Ford, Ferrari returned to Le Mans with the 512. But it wasn’t enough to stop Porsche, which had just launched the ferocious 917.

At Le Mans 1970, Ferrari entered 11 cars to counter the German threat, but heavy rain and reliability issues took their toll. Porsche went on to sweep the podium, securing a historic 1-2-3 finish. Even the film Le Mans (1971) showcased this epic rivalry on the big screen.

Jaguar vs Porsche

In the 1980s, Porsche dominated with the 936, 956, and 962C—winning Le Mans year after year. But in 1988, Jaguar struck back with the XJR-9, finally breaking Porsche’s winning streak.

It was a proud moment for British racing, and it took Porsche until 1996 to claim another Le Mans win. Their rivalry stretched across two decades and multiple classes, cementing both brands as Le Mans legends.

Jaguar vs Mercedes vs Ferrari

The rivalry between Jaguar, Mercedes, and Ferrari defined the 1950s, and Le Mans 1955 remains one of its most infamous chapters. A high-speed crash involving Pierre Levegh’s Mercedes and Lance Macklin’s Austin-Healey resulted in the tragic deaths of 83 spectators.

Mercedes withdrew from the race, despite being in the lead. Mike Hawthorn in a Jaguar D-Type went on to win, but the legacy of that year left a lasting mark on motorsport safety and ethics.
