At the heart of the story is a real and bitter rivalry. In the early ’60s, Ford attempted to buy Ferrari. The deal fell apart when Enzo Ferrari refused to give up control of his racing division—and insulted Ford’s cars in the process. Outraged, Henry Ford II vowed revenge by building a car that would beat Ferrari at Le Mans.
While some real figures are missing, the film’s central cast—Shelby, Miles, Ford and Ferrari—are portrayed with surprising accuracy. Ken Miles was indeed the no-nonsense British driver with unmatched skill, and Shelby’s efforts to fight corporate interference are grounded in fact.

The movie shows the GT40’s early problems and the engineering hurdles faced during testing. Brake failures, aerodynamics, and even the cockpit design were all genuine challenges the team overcame to turn the GT40 into a Le Mans winner.
From the stuck driver’s door at the start to Ferrari’s mechanical failures, the film captures many of the real twists and turns from Le Mans 1966. Even the controversy around the finish, where Ken Miles slowed to allow a staged photo and lost the official win—is true.

In the film, Enzo Ferrari is shown at the track in 1966. In reality, he wasn’t present at the race. The director chose to include him for dramatic effect, but this wasn’t historically accurate.

One of the more memorable scenes involves Carroll Shelby taking Henry Ford II on a high-speed lap in the GT40. It’s a great cinematic moment—but in real life, it was Ken Miles who gave Ford the white-knuckle ride.

Some events—like the test race at Willow Springs Raceway—were created to build character arcs and tension. These didn’t happen, but they helped set the stage for Ford’s big moment at Le Mans.

While the movie focuses on Shelby and Miles, the real success of the GT40 involved a much larger engineering team. Key figures like Roy Lunn, considered the "godfather" of the GT40, played vital roles that aren’t depicted in the film.
