Discover Chicago’s neighborhoods

Much like the deep-dish pizza the city is famous for, each of Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods serve up a little slice of fun no matter where you’re from or what you’re into.

Venture into the center of the city and you’ll find the vibrant Loop neighborhood, where wannabe influencers can capture their reflections in the iconic Cloud Gate or strike a pose high above the city at the top of the Willis Tower.

If you’re looking for a quieter afternoon, the Irish roots of Beverly offer the opportunity to take a moment, relax, and soak up the emerald glow of centuries of Irish-American history.

Not sure where to go on your trip to the Windy City? We’ve rounded up some of our favorite Chicago neighborhoods to add to your itinerary.

Stop by Chinatown with an empty stomach

Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood is best enjoyed when a little bit hungry and with sensible shoes.

Park near the Cermak-Chinatown station to stop by the Nine Dragon Wall, an impressive replica featuring nine of the colorful mythical creatures. The real thing can be found all the way over in Beijing.

Head further into the neighborhood, down Cemak Street, and step under the iconic Chinatown Community Center gate with its ornate embellishments. You’ll soon forget you’re in the States.

Chinatown Square Plaza is a must-visit too. Here, you’ll find quaint boutiques and gift shops selling authentic wares, while cozy eateries entice visitors with tempting smells and delicious menus. Aji Ichiban is a popular stop for those with a sweet tooth – grab a bucket and fill it with a variety of authentic Chinese candies.

If you’re visiting on a summer day, be sure to grab some flavored shaved ice, adorned with toppings of your choice. Mango Mango Dessert is a popular destination for this refreshing treat, before taking a five-minute walk to Ping Tom Memorial Park to rest your feet. The impressive park was built on an old railroad yard and features stunning Chinese-inspired landscape designs. There are also plenty of playgrounds for kids, not to mention an impressive view of the Chicago River.

Embrace the Emerald Isle in Beverly

China to Ireland may be a casual 5,000 miles apart but, in Chicago, you can get the best of both worlds just by hopping between neighborhoods. It takes just 20 minutes by car to get between Chinatown and Beverly via the I-94 Express East.

Beverly – sometimes referred to as the ‘village in the city’ – has strong roots with the Emerald Isle, with its vibrant Irish heritage and traditional inns in which to rest your feet.

Grab a bite to eat in one of the many cozy restaurants and walk off the carbs down one of the neighborhood’s many picturesque, tree-lined avenues. Still looking to satisfy that sweet tooth? Rainbow Cone is where the influencers head for a literal stack of ice cream. Five flavors are sliced, not scooped, onto your chosen cone or cup. Choose from orange sherbet, pistachio, strawberry, chocolate and palmer house (vanilla with walnuts and cherries).

Plan a trip to this neighborhood in March, to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with the locals. Each year, the South Side Irish Parade takes over the neighborhood. The area is swathed in green and erupts in celebration with bands playing, floats dominating the streets and crowds of people dressed in their finest green outfits.

Looking for something a little lower key? Architecture buffs should look out for the Beverly Unitarian Church. This impressive building was inspired by a medieval castle once seen in Ireland with its traditional towers, rough bricks and narrow windows.

Experience the heart of Chicago in the Loop

A visit to Chicago and its neighborhoods wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Bean – or Cloud Gate, as it’s officially known. This impressive art installation reflects the Chicago skyline and clouds above, stretching 33 feet high and 66 feet long. Snap a selfie in its stainless-steel surface to show friends back home.

But, of course, Chicago’s Loop neighborhood has much more to offer. See the city from a whole new vantage point with a kayak tour on the Chicago River. You’ll find companies offering this unique sightseeing opportunity along the banks, where you can hop into a kayak and navigate the waters with a paddle in hand.

Visiting after dark in the summer months? Head to Millennium Park with a picnic blanket and set up in front of the unique bandshell, where you can catch a movie under the stars.

Get sand between your toes in South Shore

If all you want to do on your road trip travels is relax – and rightly so – Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood will hit the spot. Sandy shores and laid-back vibes are what you’ll find here, as well as structures that will satisfy every architecture lover’s needs.

Spend the day on Rainbow Beach, with its well-maintained sand and inspiring views of the Chicago skyline that bounces across the water. There’s a gymnasium close by if you want to get some cardio in, but otherwise, take a swim, lay down a beach towel and soak up the Illinois sun.

When you’re done finding sand in places you shouldn’t, head out for a little sightseeing. The South Shore Cultural Center is a popular landmark of the city. The 65-acre park is open to the public and – it’s also where the Obamas held their wedding reception – very fancy.

Take in the stunning Mediterranean-Revival building before enjoying a walk around the grounds, which also features a butterfly park. If you’re a golfer, there’s also a nine-hole course where you can practice your swing.

Enjoy all things indie in Logan Square

Logan Square is home to a host of independent eateries, locally owned shops and trendy restaurants with menus full of tasty bites.

Looking for a souvenir or gift to take home? Wolfbait & B-Girls sells accessories, art and apparel, working with local makers to stock and showcase the very best of independent wares. There are also regular workshops and events taking place, so check those out before stopping by.

Feeling hungry? Pitch up on the patio at Parson’s Chicken and Fish restaurant and feast on hot chicken sandwiches, fried fish and towering burgers with fries. Plant-based options are also available. Wash it down with one of their infamous slushies – or a pickle soda if you’re feeling adventurous.

Have a gamer in your group? Drop into Logan Arcade and revel in the blinking lights and noise of the restored retro game machines. Challenge your partner to some pinball or try your hand at some old-school Ms. Pacman.

Feeling inspired for your trip to Chicago? Take some time to check out these unique neighborhoods for an unforgettable trip.
