Driving In and Around St. Petersburg

  • Interstate 275 (I-275) connects St. Petersburg to Tampa, along with Sarasota and Fort Myers via the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and I-75. It also connects the city to St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.
  • Interstate 4 (I-4) is a southeast-northwest highway in Florida that begins at an interchange with I-275 in Tampa. It is the main route from St. Petersburg to Orlando.
  •  U.S. Route 19 (US-19) runs along the west coast of Florida, overlapping with parts of I-275 and I-75. It links the city to the many beaches along the Gulf of Mexico.

How to Get From St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport to Downtown

It takes around 20 minutes to drive the 12 miles from the car rental lot at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport to Downtown St. Petersburg.

  1. Leave the Hertz rental lot Airport Parkway.
  2. Turn onto FL-686 E/Roosevelt Boulevard.
  3. Take a left onto Ulmerton Road.
  4. Use the right-hand lane to head towards I-275 S.
  5. Merge onto I-275 S, using the right two lanes, staying on for around six miles.
  6. Take exit 22 for I-175, towards Tropicana Field.
  7. Continue until you reach 5th Avenue, to arrive.

 

How to Get From St. Petersburg to Tampa

Tampa is just a 25-minute drive away when you rent a car from St. Petersburg. Just follow I-275 North across Howard Frankland Bridge, over Old Tampa Bay and take Exit 44 into Downtown Tampa.
