Driving In and Around Anchorage

  • Easy Park Howard Johnson (99501) is an open lot which has plentiful spaces in the center for your Anchorage rental car. Parking is payable by app or card.
  • 5 Avenue Mall (99501) is one of the most central lots in the city and boasts incredible views of the nearby mountains on a clear day. Fees are payable by app, card or coins.
  • Street parking is payable by meter throughout Downtown Anchorage. Free parking is available for your car rental in some areas on an evening – check signs for details.

Main Routes in Anchorage

There are two main routes in and out of Anchorage.

  • Glenn Highway – 139 miles long, Glenn Highway runs from Anchorage to Little Nelchina River. Hop in a holiday car rental and hit the road, framed by ancient glaciers and some of Alaska’s most stunning scenery.
  • Seward Highway – connecting Anchorage to Seward, this scenic stretch is one of the most beautiful roads in Alaska. It runs around the base of the Chugach Mountains, then through the heart of the wilderness in the Chugach forest.

 

Traffic in Anchorage

The roads are usually at their most active between 7:30 am and 9 am in the morning, and 5 pm and 6 pm in the evening. During the winter months, it is a good idea to plan journeys according to the weather conditions.

How to Get From Anchorage Airport to Downtown Anchorage

The five-mile journey from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport to Downtown takes around 10 minutes, depending on traffic. Leave the airport along West International Airport Road and then take Minnesota Drive/Walter J. Hickel Parkway. All the way into the heart of Downtown Anchorage. Renting a car means you don’t need to wait on public transport to get from A to B.
