Karratha Airport

Welcome to Karratha.

You've made it to Australia's wild, wild west. At 1,535km north of Perth and 850km south of Broome, Karratha is in a secluded part of outback Australia. Despite its impressive geographical isolation, it’s also an economic powerhouse of Australia. Karratha is your gateway to the Pilbara region, the cornerstone of Australia's economic growth – a place where you truly can “get away from it all”.

Once you’ve selected your hire car and gotten on the road, you’ll want your first stop to be the Karratha Tourism and Visitor Centre – it’s a hub for information on all the adventures and attractions on offer in this “wide, brown land” laid out for you to explore. Despite its remote location, you’ll find the town of Karratha is full of surprisingly modern restaurants and shops to explore.

To really get a feel for the place, take a stroll along the 3.5km Yaburara Aboriginal Heritage Walk Trail – with scenic lookouts regularly dotted along the track you can move at a leisurely pace and see all the best views of the Karratha Hills at the same time. For more indigenous history you can see some of the oldest rock engravings in existence in Murujuga National Park on the Burrup Peninsula (thought to be more than thirty thousand years old), surrounded by a vivid landscape that’s sure to etch itself in your memory. Support one of the local indigenous businesses offering educational tours to get some unique insights into this very special part of the world.

The Pilbara region is twice the size of the entire United Kingdom, so a hire car is definitely essential to cover as much ground as possible while you’re here.

If you happen to be around at the time of the Full Moon between March and October, head to Hearson’s Cove, just half an hour from Karratha where you have an opportunity to witness a fascinating natural phenomena called the “Staircase to the Moon” – a trick of reflection and light that presents a breathtaking view like no other as the moon rises over the exposed tidal flats. The locals celebrate with a beachside market and really make an evening of it, with food, wine and live music adding to the party atmosphere – a magical and unforgettable evening for the whole family.

Also just thirty minutes from Karratha is the town of Dampier and the Dampier Archipelago – forty-two islands surrounded by reefs, twenty-five of which are heritage listed nature reserves. There are camping spots on some of the bigger islands, so you can enjoy breathtaking star-filled skies and an abundance of natural wildlife here. There’s also a thriving charter boat operation here – if deep sea, inlet or river fishing, scuba or snorkelling are on your wish list this is a spectacular place to indulge yourself.

Mining is a massive industry out here, pouring millions of dollars of investment into the region – the North West Shelf Project Visitor Centre lets you learn all about the Oil and Gas mining that powers the region’s economy. There’s interactive tours and panoramic views to enjoy.

For a drive you’ll never forget, take the cost road along “Eighty Mile Beach” to Cape Keraudren Costal Reserve – you will witness one of the widest expanses of white sand beaches anywhere in the world. The breathtaking combination of red earth, white sand and blue sky and sea in a vast, mindboggling expanse is not one you will soon forget.

This fascinating region has many wonders for you to explore, and your comfortable and well-appointed hire car will ensure you make the most of your visit here.

The Certification is valid until the expiry date of the China Driver's License. Both the Certification and the original China Driver’s License MUST be produced at the time of rental.

Digital Driver License

The Digital Driver Licence is legal for use across NSW & SA and is accepted by most businesses. However, it does not replace the plastic card and the official authorities recommend everyone still carry a physical card as a backup.

Fuel & Electrical Recharging Policy

Fuel is not included in your rental rate. Your vehicle will be provided with a full tank of fuel or if the tank is not full, we will provide you with credit for the missing fuel and you can decide how you wish to pay for the fuel you use during your rental. You have the following options:

Buy a full tank at the start …

  • Often referred to as our Fuel Purchase Option (FPO).
  • If you purchase a full tank of fuel from us at the start of your rental, you will not need to refill the tank before returning and will have nothing more to pay for fuel.
  • This is a good option for high kilometre journeys where you are likely to use a full tank.

Buy a half tank at the start….

  • It may be more convenient to pay for a half tank of fuel at the start of the rental and save time on refuelling by returning the vehicle with only a half a tank of fuel.
  • This is a good option for low kilometre journeys where you are more likely to use less fuel.
  •

FUEL PURCHASE OPTION (FPO)

We charge you at the start of your rental for a full tank of fuel at a price competitive with local fuel stations. You will have nothing more to pay to us for your fuel. Please note that we do not provide a refund for unused fuel.

HALF TANK OPTION

We charge you at the start of your rental for a half tank of fuel at a competitive price with local fuel stations and return with only half a tank of fuel. Please note that we do not provide a refund for unused fuel.

Return with a full tank …

  • Return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel purchased from a local fuel station.
  • This is a good option for low kilometre journeys.

IMPORTANT: Fuel gauges may still indicate that the tank is “full” many kilometres after it was last re-filled. To deal with this, we ask you to refill the tank within 15 km of the return location and bring your fuel receipt with you when returning the Vehicle. We ask you to present a copy of the fuel receipt to a Hertz employee or leave a copy in the Vehicle. If you do not do so, we reserve the right to apply a small charge – please ask at the counter for details.

…..or without refuelling

  • A good option if you are in a hurry, did not take FPO or a Half Tank of fuel and do not have time to refill the tank on return.

REFUELLING SERVICE CHARGE: We will charge you a price per litre to refill the tank. These prices are indicated on your Rental Agreement.

EV Battery Recharging Service Fee

You are liable for any reduction in battery charge percentage from when you picked up your EV to when you returned it (no refund will be provided if this figure is higher, upon return). If we are required to recharge the EV to return it to its battery departure level, we will charge you a price per kilo watt (kW), as detailed on your Rental Agreement.

EV Low Battery Recharging Service Fee

If you return the vehicle at 15% battery charge level or less, we will charge an additional recharging service fee, as detailed on your Rental Agreement.
