Things can get a little cramped when you drive your group on a snowy adventure. With everyone looking to bring their own ski or snowboarding equipment, you can quickly realise that you need more room than you originally thought.

At Hertz, we understand that oversized luggage can be a drag. That’s why we make car ski racks available at the booking stage in select locations, and make your adventure super smooth when you arrive at your pick-up location. There are a few different options open to you as well.

The Ski Rack Rental Options Available at Hertz

Secure both snowboards and skis with ski rack options. For sedans, the ski racks we provide at Hertz can hold up to four sets of skis or two snowboards. When it comes to larger vehicles such as SUVs, the racks that come with these can take between four and six sets of skis or up to four snowboards.

Most of the vehicle types that you can book from us can accommodate ski racks, although some very specific vehicles cannot accommodate any type of roof rack. This depends on the kind of roof that the vehicle has.

To make sure that your location rents out ski racks with their cars, you can check online. When you're making the reservation, the option for ski/snowboard racks should be offered in the 'Choose Extras' step of the reservation process. If you're unsure, you can always call up the location and they will be happy to help.

How Do You Carry Skis on a Car?

The ski racks can be attached to the roof of the vehicle. To transport your skis securely, you must fasten the rack down into crossbars on the top of the car. Before driving, you should always make sure that the skis are correctly positioned and secure.

Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with exactly how ski racks for cars work. We can fit the racks on your rental vehicle for you before pick-up and explain everything you need to know about using them before you drive to your destination.

We may also recommend talking you through affixing your own ski equipment into the racks we’ve fitted, so you know how to remove and refit them for later.

If you’re anticipating particularly harsh wintry conditions for your drive, snow chains are also available from some locations.

Tips for Driving in Snowy Conditions

A Car rental with a ski rack doesn’t need to be an intimidating prospect if you’ve never done it before, and neither does driving in the snow. Just follow our top tips for driving in wintry conditions and you’ll conquer those snowy roads in no time:

  • Factor the conditions into your schedule - driving in the snow can take longer (if you’re driving carefully), so plan for longer travel times in between stops
  • Take it easy on the gas, sudden acceleration can cause unwanted wheel spinning
  • Make sure to leave safe stopping gaps between you and the vehicle in front
  • If snowfall is particularly heavy, use your full headlights to increase your visibility
  • Steer into any skids you begin to experience - stay calm and avoid slamming on the brakes
  • Wear a pair of sunglasses to cut down on the glare that low winter sun can produce when reflected off the snow
  • Try to keep your footwear dry to avoid slipping on the pedals - it’s not always easy in snowy conditions, so take a small hand towel with you
  • Breaking down can happen at the worst times, so make sure to have warm clothes, blankets and a way to contact help available at all times

So getting planning your dream winter getaway. Take the family to the chalet of your dreams, or pitch hitting the slopes to your friend group chat. If you’re heading somewhere snowy for your vacation and need a car with a ski rack at the other end, you know where to come. Hertz has got you covered.
