Make your car rental experience smooth with Hertz. We have a fleet of accessible vehicles that are available to all our customers so your journey is as straightforward as possible.

What are accessible vehicles?

An accessible vehicle is specially designed to accommodate the requirements of drivers or passengers with a mobility or physical disability. In our range of accessible vehicles, you’ll find convenient features such as wheelchair ramps, lifts and hand controls. This makes it easier to get on the road and maintain independence when making your trip.

Although there are some exceptions, hand controls are available for many of our vehicles – especially fleet vehicles. If you have questions on vehicle make and model specifications, please get in touch and our team will be happy to help.

Hertz accessible vehicles

Please tell us during the reservation which vehicle modifications you’ll need to accommodate physical or mobility disabilities of yourself or any passengers. Many of our vehicles can be modified, however some makes and models are exempt due to safety issues.

If you choose a minivan or 4-wheel drive vehicle, wheelchairs can be comfortably stored inside. We advise that you contact the pickup location staff directly, so they can explain the specific vehicles and possible adaptations.

Spinner knobs

This device attaches to the steering wheel of the vehicle. There is no extra fee for requesting this be fitted. Spinner knobs are available on all groups of vehicles we offer. Please let us know you’ll require a spinner knob for your rental at least 24 to 48 hours before your expected pickup time.

Hand controls

Hand controls simply attach to the vehicle’s gas and brake pedals. So, you can then control the vehicle without having to use your legs. For example, if you use a wheelchair or have another physical disability that impacts your legs. Pickup locations across the US offer left- and right-hand controls for your vehicle at no added cost. Please tell us you need hand controls at least 8 to 72 hours before your pickup.

Renting an accessible vehicle from Hertz

Choosing and renting an accessible vehicle from the Hertz fleet is simple. Make a reservation online or give us a call if you prefer. During the reservation process, you can request the specific requirement needed for your accessible vehicle and we’ll ensure the appropriate vehicle is chosen or suitable vehicle adaptations are made.

From some Hertz locations, we even offer pick-up and drop-off services, so you can enjoy a seamless trip from door to door. At some airport locations, you can also request the Hertz Easy Access Bus. With wide doors, electric wheelchair ramps and spacious aisles, it’s designed to make travelling more comfortable if you’re a person with a physical disability.

Please note, we require at least 72 hours’ notice in advance of your reservation to ensure we can get the Easy Access Bus to you. For other vehicle modifications such as hand controls or spinner knobs, we require 8 to 24 hours’ notice.

Accessible Parking

Our Hertz corporate locations come with accessible parking for car returns. Before dropping off your car rental, just tell the Hertz representative that you need accessible parking and they’ll be able to direct you.

Easy Access Bus

Many Hertz car rental locations feature an easy-access bus for customers who need wheelchair accessibility. Built to the strict standards laid out by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), these buses have inclusive features like an electric ramp, easily accessible waist-height luggage racks, oversized aisles, wide doors, and other accommodations that make for a more inclusive customer experience
