Driving In and Around New Hampshire

  • On Interstate 93, the speed limit is 70mph.
  • All other freeways outside of the cities are 65mph.
  • When approaching a city on a freeway, the speed limit drops to 55mph.
  • Urban districts have a speed limit of 30mph.
  • School zones in NH have a 10mph limit 45 minutes before a school opens, and 45 minutes after it closes.

Unlike other regions of the US, New England isn’t known for its heavy traffic. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t hit traffic during peak times, such as rush hour. This is usually between 6 am to 8:30 am and 4 pm till 6 pm Monday to Friday. Weekends can also get congested on I-93, as people travel between Boston and the mountain ranges of New Hampshire.

Main Routes in New Hampshire

  • Interstate 93 (I-93) runs from north to south of New Hampshire and passes through main cities such as Concord and Manchester. Stay on this route south to reach Boston.
  • Interstate 89 (I-89) heads west from the I-93 just south of Concord towards Mount Kearsarge State Forest Park and Lake Sunapee, before cutting across the state of Vermont.
  • U.S. Route 302 goes east to west from Maine to Vermont, heading past the spectacular White Mountain National Forest in NH.

Concord to Portsmouth

The pretty port city of Portsmouth is only an hour away from New Hampshire’s capital. Take the US-202 E from Concord, which eventually becomes the US-4, for around 45 miles.

 

Manchester to Nashua

See the sights of New Hampshire’s most populous city with ease in your rental car. Nashua is under 30 minutes away from Manchester’s center, or 20 miles, via the Everett Turnpike.
