This may be Sweden’s ’second city’, but Gothenburg offers first-class attractions.
You’ll find a modern and refined atmosphere in the center, and islands scattered off the coastline that offer a peaceful and tranquil escape. Here are just some of the finest things to do.
Experience the rides at Liseberg
Visit one of the most famous amusement parks in Scandinavia, which offers fun for all the family – with more than 40 rides and attractions to enjoy.
Thrill-seekers can experience the power of Helix, the longest and fastest roller coaster in this part of Europe – which reaches speeds of up to 100km/h (62mph). If that’s not enough, you can also ride one of the finest wooden roller coasters in the world, in the shape of ‘Balder’. There is also a dedicated children’s area too, with plenty of kid-friendly rides.
If you’re visiting in summer, you can dance the night away to the regular live concerts that take place here. If you’re planning to visit later in the year, then you’ll see the park dressed up in style for Halloween or Christmas.
Step into the rainforest at Universeum
This remarkable wildlife and science center is situated across seven giant floors, and is home to both a tropical rainforest and a stunning aquarium.
As you wander around you’ll see both exotic plants and captivating creatures including monkeys, sloths, caimans, snakes, sharks and rays. In the rainforest you can take in the view as you walk over the suspension bridge alongside 80-foot kapok trees.
There are animal keepers on hand, so you can ask any questions you may have about the residents here.
Visit the ‘Fish Church’
Seafood lovers will be in heaven in Gothenburg, with its coastal location ensuring that fish and shellfish dishes are readily available.
As well as tucking in at one of the local restaurants and enjoying the likes of oysters or shrimp, you can also visit the Feskekôrka fish market.
This dates back to 1874 and is known as the ‘Fish Church’ because of its distinctive architectural style. But it also speaks to its celebration of seafood too.
As well as browsing the stalls, take time to admire the building itself – you might notice the inspiration taken from Gothic stone cathedrals, and the wooden stave churches that Scandinavia is famed for.
Explore Gothenburg’s Archipelago
You won’t want to miss the islands situated just off Gothenburg’s coastline, of which there are 20 in total.
To the west, Öckerö and Björkö are reachable by car ferry, and feature idyllic places to eat, swim and sightsee. Roll down the windows and take in the view and sea air as you drive around the blissful area.
If you want to head south, park up your rental car to visit the nine car-free islands – such as Aspero, which has spectacular views, walking trails and kayaking to enjoy.
Don’t forget your walking boots. These islands are the perfect place for hiking or, alternatively, cycling through the spectacular scenery. Make sure you stop off to see the quaint and colorful villages.
Car rental in Gothenburg enables you to explore the best of the city and head further into the surrounding landscape of Sweden, exploring at your own pace.
