A Quick Guide to Cyprus

As a beautiful Mediterranean island, Cyprus is perhaps best known for its beaches. But spend some time exploring in your rental car and you will find quiet villages and ancient monuments, together with a stunning mountainous interior.

Paphos

Treasures of Paphos

Paphos offers a wealth of attractions that should secure its place on your vacation itinerary, including the 30 miles of gorgeous coastline that make this the perfect destination to unwind. The crescent-shaped Coral Bay, with white sands and turquoise waters, lies a short drive north of the city center and offers a peaceful start to your journey.

Paphos is also home to some of the most spectacular landmarks in Cyprus. Outside the city towards Limassol you’ll find Aphrodite’s Rock, said to the spot where the Ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty emerged from the sea. You can’t swim out as far as the rock itself, but seeing it from the shore makes the perfect backdrop to a romantic stroll.

Paphos tombs

Ancient Relics

If you want to delve into the history of Cyprus, there are a few sites around Paphos that are not to be missed. Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, near the waterfront, houses the remains of the former Roman and Greek city that stood on this site. Parts of villas, ancient mosaics and monuments are still visible.

The park’s star attraction is the Tombs of the Kings - a series of chambers inspired by Ancient Egypt that were the final resting place for some of the most important figures in Cyprus. You can still see magnificent columns and caves carved out of the rock. Afterwards, pay a visit to Paphos Archaeological Museum, which boasts treasures excavated across the area from Roman and Ancient Greek times.

Larnaca

Lively Larnaca

Elsewhere on the south coast the port city of Larnaca boasts a beguiling mix of ancient and modern attractions. Its architectural gems include the Church of St Lazarus, a 9th century Greek Orthodox building dedicated to the saint said to have risen from the dead.

Meanwhile, the old Turkish Quarter - known as Skala - gives you the chance to browse the local craft stores popping up around this once-neglected neighborhood. Finish the day with a trip to Mackenzie Beach, a bustling resort where you can explore colorful shops and friendly cafés before taking a dip in the calm, clear waters.

Troodos Mountains

Into the Mountains

With a rental car in Cyprus, it’s easy to head away from the island’s busy coastal areas to explore its mountainous interior. The Troodos Mountains, accessible by car from Limassol, boast scenic hiking paths where you can enjoy views over the island and the sea beyond.

Head to one of the mountain villages such as Pedoulas to relax and unwind away from the busy resorts. Get a taste of traditional Cypriot life beneath pine groves and fruit trees while sampling traditional local delicacies such as souvlakia – grilled meat kebabs – or kolokasi, a root vegetable usually served in hearty pork dishes.

Driving In and Around Cyprus

There are two main airports in Cyprus, each providing a convenient location to collect your rental car. The largest is Larnaca on the south coast of the island and just a short drive from the port city of the same name.

Hop in your rental car at Larnaca Airport and you’ll be well placed to join the A1 motorway, also known as the Nicosia-Limassol Highway. The longest route on the island, this runs from the south coast to the island’s capital Nicosia in the center. Larnaca also boasts convenient links to the A3 - a 34-mile route linking the city with the tourist resort of Ayia Napa, home to Nissi Beach and the island’s busiest nightlife.

The second airport on Cyprus, Paphos, is close to the historic city of the same name on the south west coast. From here, it’s easy to jump in your car and visit ancient attractions such as the Kato Paphos Archaeological Park and the Tombs of the Kings. You can also reach Larnaca from Paphos, by travelling just over 80 miles along the A6 coastal road.

Outside the main cities, the roads in Cyprus are quiet making it quick and easy to get around by car. There are a couple of simple rules to remember, including driving on the left-hand side of the road and overtaking other vehicles on the right.

Give way to the right at junctions, unless otherwise signposted. The maximum speed limits on motorways in Cyprus is 100km/h (62mph) unless there are signs stating otherwise, while in built-up urban areas the limit falls to 50km/h (31mph).
