Driving In and Around Pittsburgh

  • If you’re visiting PNC Park for a ball game, park at Fort Duquesne and Sixth Garage (15222) or Theater Square Garage (15222), then walk over Roberto Clemente Bridge to reach the stadium.

Rush hour usually hits the city at around 6:30 to 7am, gradually calming just after 9am. Traffic remains steady throughout the day, until evening commuters hit the roads after 2pm. Several interstate highways connect Pittsburgh to the rest of Pennsylvania and beyond. They make it easy for you to get around in your rental car.

  • Interstate 76 (I-76) runs around the north east of Pittsburgh, connected to the city via I-376. It reaches Philadelphia in the east and Akron, Ohio, northwest.
  • Interstate 376 (I-376) travels through the city center and is a connecting route to I-76 and I-80, which helps you reach the wider Pennsylvania state.

How to Get From Pittsburgh to Downtown

It takes little more than 20 minutes to make the 18-mile drive from Pittsburgh Airport to central Pittsburgh in a rental car from Hertz:

  1. Exit the Hertz rental lot and merge onto Airport Boulevard.
  2. Take the two left lanes to stay left at the fork and enter I-376 E.
  3. Remain on this route for about 17 miles.
  4. Travel over the Fort Pitt Bridge and use the middle two lanes to take the I-279 exit.
  5. Stay right to continue onto Exit 70A.
  6. Carry on towards Liberty Avenue for less than half a mile towards Downtown.

 

Pittsburgh to Cleveland

Cleveland, Ohio is little more than two hours drive north of Pittsburgh in a Hertz rental car.

  • Take I-279 out of the city.
  • Merge onto Interstate 76.
  • Use I-80 and I-480 to reach Cleveland.
