Geographically, Mallorca has two distinct sections, dominated by the mountain ranges of Serra de Tramuntana in the west, and the Serra de Llevant to the east.

Most visitors who arrive in Palma de Mallorca will look to spend their time along the island’s coastline. It’s a fun-loving place once the sun sets, with sea-facing restaurants and vibrant cafes and bars.

Palma's architecture reflects its international history, so the center is a fantastic place to start your vacation. The capital’s most famous building is its Gothic cathedral, La Seu – a stunning structure which stands in the heart of the city.

Designed by famed Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, it’s a different breed to other cathedrals across the globe. Be sure to crane your neck to the sky to take in the incredible main façade.

Close by is the 13^th century L'Almudaina palace with its pristine gardens. While it was converted into a more Gothic style under Jaume II, you can still see some of its original Islamic architecture. For the most beautiful view of the courtyard, be sure to visit during the afternoon when the sun begins to sink in the sky.

Another must-see in Mallorca is the Plaça Cort. Here, you’ll find the city’s town hall and a magnificent olive tree, which is said to be around 800 years old. Look around the trunk of this giant tree to spot the faces hidden in the bark.

Palma is sometimes called a mini-Barcelona, and there is certainly a modernist flavor to the city’s architecture. The Gaudi influence began when he oversaw the restoration works of the town’s Gothic cathedral and Fundacio La Caixa, Palma’s signature modernist building, which is now a thriving art gallery.

There is an array of beaches to enjoy in Mallorca and, with 340 miles of coastline, it’s a case of choosing what type you prefer. A favorite among the locals is Portixol, which is about two miles east of Palma town center and easily accessible if you rent a car.

This charming corner of the island is popular lunch spot for locals and visitors alike, a relaxing spot away from the bustle of the capital.

Close to the island’s airport, you’ll find Playa de Palma, a beach resort popular with party goers and kite surfers during the summer months. It’s about seven miles east of Palma and easy to find.

In the neighboring towns of Cala Major and Illetas, you’ll find some of the most beautiful beaches on the south-west coast of Mallorca. Parking your rental car is limited here, so you may have to leave Palma de Mallorca early to guarantee a space close to the beach.

The area of Cala D’or is around an hour’s drive in a holiday rental car from Palma city. Filled with enchanting coves and a selection of wonderful beaches, this is the perfect place for a day away.

As with the rest of Spain, you’ll be driving your rented car on the right-hand side in Palma. Speed limits vary from 74mph (120km/h) on autopista (highways), 62mph (100km/h) on autovia (divided highways), 55mph (90km/h) on main roads, and 31mph (50km/h) in towns.

Our car rental desk is on the ground floor of La Palma Airport, just after the baggage claim. Keys in hand, you’re just a 20-minute drive from the island’s capital, taking the Autopista de Llevant/Ma-19 route.

If you’re driving your rental car directly to Palma, there’s a huge parking lot in the center. Most hotels offer guest parking, so you’ll likely have no problem leaving your car if you’re heading to the beach for the day. Just be sure to check with the hotel first, though.

When you're parking in Palma, look out for pay-and-display signs in the blue zones – those marked with red and yellow lines are for residents only. If you’re driving during peak travel times, allow more time for your journey.

If you want to head further afield, the lively town of Magaluf is around a 30-minute drive from the airport – along the Ma-20 and Ma-1. Here you’ll find a wealth of restaurants and entertainment spots, as well as waterparks to enjoy.
