The Medieval History of Oviedo

Take a tour of two churches that have stood on the outskirts of the city since the 9th century. The tiny pre-Romanesque churches of San Miguel de Lillo and Santa Maria del Naranco are the town’s biggest attractions. Perched on a verdant hillside, they offer incredible views of Oviedo and the surrounding countryside.

Once you’ve driven your car rental back to the center of Oviedo, make a beeline for Plaza Alfonso II, a lively central square flanked by grand old mansions and the city’s famous Catedral de San Salvador.

The Gothic church was built and added to over the centuries, providing an eclectic mix of architectural styles, the most historic part being 9th century holy chamber, Cámara Santa. Discover the beauty of this cloister, admire the lavish Spanish-Flemish style of the 16th century altarpiece, and marvel at sacred artifacts inside.
