A great place to start your visit to Menorca is the island’s coastal capital, Mahón. Set along a cliff looking out over the harbor, this town boasts a historic center with a distinct mix of Menorcan and British-style buildings.

Meander down to the waterside to discover Fortaleza dela Mola. At the 19th century stronghold, you can stroll around the ruins and enjoy excellent views of the surrounding coastline. From here, head back into Mahón’s center and feel the magic of the old town. The tangle of narrow streets, lined with a parade of townhouses and handsome mansions, spill out onto lively squares.

Driving In and Around Menorca

As there’s no rail or subway network in Menorca, it’s easiest to navigate your way around the island by holiday car rental. Menorca is a relatively small island, so you’ll find that all the things to see and do within easy reach.

The two main towns in Menorca are Mahón and Ciutadella, which are connected by the Me-1 freeway. Both boast their own unique attractions – the historic beauty of Ciutadella’s old quarter and the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean at Mahón.

Parc Natural S’Albufera des Grau is close to Mahón, just a 15-minute journey along the Me-5 in a Menorca car rental. Life at this wildlife oasis revolves around a freshwater lagoon, so pack your swimming gear and hiking shoes and set off on an outdoor adventure.

More natural beauty can be found at Calaen Turqueta, one of the best beaches on the island. From Ciutadella, it takes half an hour in a Menorca car rental via the Camí de Cala en Turqueta. The turquoise waters are mesmerizing and perfect for snorkeling.

Driving a holiday car rental around Menorca is relatively simple, with the road system mostly based around the east to west main road, the ME-1. There are no freeways on the island, with smaller local roads the norm.

The signs on the roads are usually clear and easy to follow, although it’s worth noting that they do not used Anglicized place names – so for example the capital Mahón will be shown on road signs with its Catalan name Maó.

Roads around Menorca are generally relatively quiet, and you’ll find plenty of parking lots available for your holiday car rental. Some spaces are marked with bluelines, meaning you’ll need to purchase a parking ticket from a nearby machine.

As in the US, you’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road, seatbelts must be worn at all times and mobile phone use while driving is illegal.
