Driving In and Around Newark

  • In Downtown Newark, many parking garages are available for your rental car. The parking lots on Hill Street and Washington Street (both NJ 07102) are best located for walking into the center.
  • Street parking can be at a premium in central areas of the city. If you find a spot for your rental car in Newark, check the signs for potential restrictions.
  • The Prudential Centre (15 Lafayette St. Newark, NJ 07102) has 3,500 parking spaces, with the option to pre-pay for parking available online.

 

Knowing the busiest times on the road in the city when renting a car in Newark can be helpful. These are 7.30-9.30am and 4.30-6.30pm. The Route 21 McCarter Highway is especially busy, running from the airport into the city. 

 

  • Route 21 McCarter Highway – this north-to-south highway connects the Passaic River to Clifton. It also connects Newark Liberty Airport with Downtown Newark. 
  • Garden State Parkway – straddling the border of the Parkway and Newark, this is one of New Jersey’s most congested roads. 
  • I-280 – leading into Newark from the east side, the I-280 joins Morris County, Newark, and the New Jersey Turnpike. 

 

How to Get From Newark to New York 

The journey from Newark to New York City can take 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic and where in the city you want to get to. To reach Midtown Manhattan in your Newark rental car, you’ll need to take the Lincoln Tunnel toll road, which costs $16: 

  1. Leaving from Broad Street, merge onto the I-280E 
  2. Take exit 15X and 16E towards Lincoln Tunnel to join the I-95 
  3. Take exit 16E then continue on the NJ495 E 
  4. Follow the Lincoln Tunnel to reach New York at Hudson Yards on Manhattan’s West Side.

 

Downtown Newark to Newark Liberty Airport 

The journey from downtown Newark to Newark Airport is around four miles and takes about 10 minutes in a rental car on Route 21 McCarter Highway. 

 

Newark to Jersey City 

The drive to Jersey City from Newark in your rental car will take 20 minutes in moderate traffic. Use the I-95 and I-78 heading East. From here you can visit the Liberty Science Center and Liberty State Park.
