Norway’s third-largest city is one of the most picturesque and vibrant destinations in the country.
As with many of the country’s northern regions, it is especially light here in the summer – giving you plenty of time to explore when you rent a car in Trondheim.
Take In the Nidelva River
The city’s Bakklandet district is instantly recognizable for its colorful wooden warehouses. Park your car rental and wander around the historic neighbourhood, and even explore it from the water.
Kayaking is a popular activity in the city and the ideal way to take advantage of the waterways, giving you an alternative view of the city. Many tours start at Tempe idrettsanlegg. Admire Nidaros Cathedral

You’ll find it right in the center of the city, although you’ll likely see it before you even arrive. The cathedral can be seen from across Trondheim, dominating the skyline with its 320-foot spires.
Take your time to admire the exterior, with some of the oldest parts dating as far back as the 11th century. The cathedral is built on the burial site of Saint Olav and stands proudly as the most northerly medieval cathedral in the world.

Explore The City’s Museums
There are many museums in this city – offering a fascinating insight into the culture of Trondheim and Norway.
Two of the best are the National Museum of Decorative Arts and the Trondheim Museum of Art. Once you have been to the cathedral, make sure to visit the Archbishop’s Palace Museum to learn more about its past and see original sculptures.
If you’re a fan of music, don’t miss Rockheim, a national center of popular music boasting interactive exhibitions. The attraction takes you through pop and rock music from the 1950s to the present day. The Trøndelag Folk Museum is another curious highlight – an outdoor museum where you can see up to 80 historic buildings.
Bymarka
Take a short 20 to 30-minute drive in your car rental to the west of the city and you will reach Bymarka forest, an ideal spot for hiking.
Park your rental car and follow one of the marked trails – of which there are more than 124 miles in total. There are also 10 lakes to walk around, with various viewpoints to stop off at.
Adventurers may also like to head up to Gråkallen, a spectacular mountain that reaches a height of 1,800 feet. Take in the magnificent views or even explore by mountain bike. During winter, there are also more than 100 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails in Trondheim.
If you’re visiting during warmer seasons, don’t forget to pack your swimwear if you fancy taking a dip. Lianvatnet lake is a great spot to relax.

Driving In and Around Trondheim
Seeing Trondheim by rental car is the ideal way to explore at your own pace. Prepare to bask in all its spectacular scenery, from the glistening waterways to the rows of traditional, multicolored buildings.
Elgeseter Gate runs straight through the center of the city, and is connected to the E6 highway by Holtermann's veg. It’ll take you over the Nidelva and towards the coastline that runs along the Trondheim Fjord. You’ll find many of the city’s museums just off this road, with plenty of convenient street parking and a number of large lots nearby for your car rental.
When you rent a car from Trondheim, you’ll be well-connected to the rest of Norway. The E6 passes along the south of the city and at the coast joins the 706 which heads into the city from the east. If you continue on the E6 heading east then north, it will take you along the coast and continues all the way to Bognes in the far north of the country.
Norway is known for its scenic drives. When you take to the road, you’ll find views that will take your breath away around almost every corner.
From Trondheim you can experience the ‘Green Shortcut’ or Østerdalen valley. To cover the entire route to Oslo in your rental car from Trondheim, it would take around seven hours. Even if you don’t have time for an extended road trip, it’s worth driving along this road as it runs alongside the Glomma river, lined with lush green pine trees.
If you make it as far as the midway point on the way to the capital, you’ll see a giant metal moose near the village of Atna which is known as ‘Stroelgen’ or The Big Elk. This isn’t the only piece of animal art along this route; there are 60 brightly colored sets of antlers to spot.
