A prosperous society came to an unfortunate end in 1613BC, when it was buried under a mountain of volcanic ash after an eruption. However, this ash helped preserve the remains, which you can view today.

Santorini car rental FAQs

Parking is abundant across Santorini, both in paid lots and on the streets. However, spots do fill up quickly in peak season, so you may need to drive around for a while before you find somewhere. Three of the best options we’ve found are:

●        Fira Main Parking Lot: The main public parking area near the cable car. It’s free to use, but it fills up fast, so arrive early to bag your spot.

●        Smaller villages: Places such as Imerovigli & Firostefani offer more free parking options than the main towns. Look for signs reading "Free," "Parking 6," or "Parking 8."

●        Hotel accommodation: As parking can be hard to find when places are busy, check whether your hotel has on-site parking so you know you’ll always have somewhere for your Santorini rental car.

Santorini’s roads are, in the main, narrow and winding, with many also being steep and cobbled. Most roads do not have names, as the island is relatively small.

●        The primary road runs the length of the island and connects many major points, including Fira, Oia, the airport, and the main harbor. It takes around 40 minutes to drive from one side of the island to the other.

●        Secondary paved roads run off this primary road to connect to popular spots such as the beaches.

●        Some of the more remote spots on Santorini, such as Mesa Pigadia and Eros Beach, can only be reached down unpaved tracks. Be aware that you may not be covered for damage caused on these tracks under your Santorini rental car insurance.

You should be able to reach Fira, the capital of Santorini, in around 15 minutes when you rent a car from Santorini International Airport.

  1. Take the north exit from the Hertz pick-up point and turn left after 400m.
  2. Turn right after another 600m, then turn left after 2.4km.
  3. In 1.5km, turn right.
  4. Continue on 25is Martiou to reach the center of Fira.
