Driving In and Around Aarhus

Driving a car rental in and around Aarhus is relatively straightforward, as the road network is excellently maintained and directions are well signed. You won’t find much in the way of heavy traffic, either, as many locals prefer to use bicycles to get around.

In the summer months, it’s easy to reach a beach using your rental car. Drive just a few miles north of the city center via Nordre Ringgade and you’ll find yourself at Bellevue Beach, featuring soft sand and cool waters to take a dip in. There is also parking where you can leave your rental car in Aarhus to enjoy a day in the sun.

When driving in Denmark you must have your headlights on, even during the day and in the summer months. Be sure to check these are switched on before you head off on your journey – and that they are switched off when you park up too!

When it comes to speed limits these will generally be 50km/h (30mph) in built-up areas, 80km/h (49mph) on out-of-town roads and 130km/h (80mph) on major highways, but simply check the signs as you go.

Between the hours of 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, there are certain stretches of highway where you are unable to overtake other vehicles. Look out for signs that confirm where these stretches are.

If you want to head a little further out of the city, consider driving across to Denmark’s capital Copenhagen. Overall, the drive takes around three hours, with a fun journey via ferry along the way. Don’t fancy crossing the water? Make the most of your Aarhus rental car and navigate the route via the E20 road. It takes an additional 20 minutes but is worth it for the incredible scenic views.

The E45 meanwhile will take you north to the city of Randers, where there is a popular zoo and even more notable buildings.
