This stylish hotel originally opened to act as a refuge for passengers traveling on the Orient Express, and retains the same fairytale exterior and upmarket interiors with every modern convenience.

Proto - Dubrovnik

Široka ul. 1, 20000, Dubrovnik, Croatia

A seafood lover’s paradise, this impressive eatery has been known for its fresh dishes from the ocean and stunning rooftop terrace since 1886. A real must-visit for travelers seeking delicious Dalmatian flavors in an authentic spot, and recommended in the Michelin Guide for its gourmet menu. Inspired by Dubrovnik’s culinary artistry and indigenous dishes from land and sea, expert chefs add innovative twists to recipes handed down through generations.

The menu changes regularly to reflect the freshest seasonal ingredients. Sample dishes may include lobster salad or grilled foie gras with fried apple to start, and flambéed scampi tail ravioli or gratinated sea bream with black olive paté for the main event. Freshly caught seafood is combined with organic vegetables grown locally at rural homesteads and in the gardens of Župa Dubrovačka.

Pod Zidom Bistro - Zagreb

Pod zidom 5, 10000, Zagreb, Croatia

An upmarket bistro with a focus on local ingredients, this hidden gem in the heart of Zagreb is another Michelin recommended hotspot in Croatia. A local favorite that is also popular among the international jet-setting crowd – drawn to the modern interiors with a hint of rustic charm, and the uniquely positioned open terrace overlooking the iconic Zagreb Cathedral.

The menu blends signature dishes with specialty creations based on the highest quality seasonal ingredients purchased daily from Dolac Market. Think wild garlic and pea soup in springtime, wild Adriatic white fish with pomegranate, mandarin and fennel in the summer, and rabbit ragout with horseradish foam in the fall.

Monte - Rovinj

Ul. Montalbano 75, 52210, Rovinj, Croatia

Rustic-chic charm in the classic Istrian tavern style pervades at this family-owned restaurant, renowned as a gourmet oasis in the heart of the town. The parent and sons team offer residents and visitors a unique set of six-course tasting menus styled around “tricolore” – green for vegetarian, blue for land and sea, and red for a focus on one core seasonal ingredient prepared multiple ways.

You can also choose to construct your own three or four course menu from dishes featured within the tasting menus. Inspiration comes from small artisan local food producers, farmers and fisheries, prepared with international flair and a touch of local tradition. It doesn’t get more authentically Croatian.

Drive the Dalmatian coast

Hop in your Croatia rental car and follow the scenic Adriatic Highway from Split to Dubrovnik for spectacular scenery along one of the most iconic routes in the world. Stop at small fishing villages, stroll on hidden beaches and enjoy some of the best historic towns along this winding and scenic coastal road.

Start in the richly cultural town of Split for the well-preserved Roman architecture of Diocletian’s Palace, a day basking in the sun on Bačvice Beach, and a stroll around the Varoš neighborhood. For some of the best beaches in the archipelago, head to Hvar, just a short ferry trip away, or try Korčula for picturesque medieval towns surrounded by lush, forested landscapes. The Pelješac Peninsula is an ideal spot for foodies with some of the country’s best restaurants, then finish in Dubrovnik – more on that below.

Visit Plitvice Lakes

This national park is filled with beautiful turquoise lakes and cascading waterfalls. Hiking trails and wooden pathways make it one of the country’s top natural attractions, with a shuttle bus and electric boat available to help you get around. This UNESCO World Heritage site is known for its series of 16 terraced lakes, connected in one long chain by walkways and waterfalls. The unique tufa barrier (natural dam) formation is a geological wonder, created over thousands of years.

Highlights include the Valiki Slap, the tallest waterfall in the park at 78 meters, in the Lower Lakes area. The Upper Lakes are wilder, and the entire park is home to a variety of natural flora and fauna, including rare birds, boars, bears, wolves and deer.

Explore Dubrovnik

Walk the UNESCO-listed city walls, wander all the narrow streets, stop for a coffee and a local pastry and then take the cable car for some awesome panoramic views. Dubrovnik is Croatia’s most famous – and memorable – coastal city for a very good reason. Long known as the Pearl of the Adriatic and more recently famous as the backdrop for King’s Landing in the popular Game of Thrones TV series, this iconic city is a destination in itself.

Make sure to leave plenty of room in the itinerary to explore everything it has to offer. GOT buffs can see the Red Keep, Qarth and other iconic locations – the “Red Keep” is actually Fort Lovrijenac. This offers panoramic views and stunning ancient architecture, so well worth a visit even if you don’t know your dragons from your direwolves! Take a stroll along the city walls, built in the 13th and 14th century, or head out on a kayak to see the city from the water for a new perspective.
