Where History Meets The River

Nestled on the banks of the mighty Murray River, the historic town of Echuca is a timeless gem that invites you to slow down, relax and immerse yourself in its stories from a bygone era. From the serene riverside and historic port, to the architecturally rich town centre, Echuca is a regional city like no other. With so much to offer in terms of culture, history, unique attractions and culinary delights, you’ll find yourself easily captivated by this city and its charm. Get ready to explore all that Echuca and beyond has to offer as we take you on a journey of discovery with Hertz.

A City of Living History

After picking up your Hertz rental car from Echuca Downtown, start off with a visit to the historic city centre. Here you'll find streets lined with elegant and beautifully restored heritage buildings that have been turned into an assortment of cafes, restaurants and boutique shops, all yours to peruse. Discover the rich history of the city on a self-guided Heritage Walk, where you’ll be transported back to life in the 1870’s. This short walk through the CBD takes you past some of the city’s most magnificent buildings and finest examples of colonial architecture. Along the walk, stop in at Johnny & Lyle’s on High Street for a delicious brunch and the best coffee in town (as voted by the locals).

Back in its heyday, the Murray River was a hive of activity, bustling with paddle steamers and river trading at the Port of Echuca. Today, the port is an open air museum and living monument to a bygone era. Visit the Port Discovery Centre and discover Echuca’s rich maritime and cultural history. Two of the port’s original paddle steamers have been lovingly restored to their former glory, and what better way to discover Echuca's maritime heritage, than on a paddle steamer cruise down the Murray River. Relax on the deck and take in the scenic vistas of the sweeping Murray and its majestic red river gums. If you enjoy the finer things, spoil yourself with a premium lunch cruise. This popular package includes a delicious two-course, chef-inspired lunch at Morrisons winery, where you’ll be able to indulge in wine tastings while you soak in the scenery - it doesn’t get much better. Be sure to assign a designated driver if you’re driving after the cruise.

After a leisurely afternoon down the Murray, you’ll want to head back to your very own luxury abode during your time in Echuca. Just a 10 minute drive away in the neighbouring town of Moama, Perricoota Vines Retreat is the region’s premier deluxe accommodation option, tucked away on a quiet river bend just outside of town. This secluded retreat features a plethora of leisure facilities to enjoy, as well as onsite yoga and massage therapy for that extra touch of extravagance. Enjoy your very own spacious yet cosy self-contained villa, and relax on your private verandah overlooking the lake and gardens. For a delicious local dinner, the highly-acclaimed Junction Moama is only a short drive away. This beautiful bar and restaurant is a well known gathering place for locals and visitors alike, and is the perfect spot to enjoy some of the region’s finest food, wine and craft beer. If you do decide to enjoy a tipple, ensure you have a designated driver nominated for the drive back.

Adventures Beyond the City

Echuca is a city with so much to offer visitors - a town steeped in history, riches, culture and captivating charm. While you’re here, take some time to explore beyond the city, where you’ll experience the true beauty of the Murray Valley and its rich natural wonders. The absolute best way to explore this stunning region is on four wheels, with your Hertz rental car being a ticket to a whole host of adventures. No matter which direction you’re headed, you’ll be sure to discover something remarkable.

Head 30 minutes North of Echuca and discover Barmah National Park and Murray Valley National Parks, which straddle the banks of Murray. Home to towering gum forests, ancient Aboriginal sites and stunning river landscapes, the pristine bushland of these national parks is the perfect place to get your nature fix and recharge your batteries. Wildlife lovers will find themselves at home, with abundant birdlife and wildlife to spot year-round.

The surrounding region is dotted with charming rural towns, each with their own unique flair and character. Discover the towns of the region on the Echuca Silo Art Trail - not only will you get to enjoy stunning silo art in iconic rural settings, but it will take you off the beaten path to discover the beauty of life in country Victoria. This is a gorgeous country drive that is best taken slowly, and broken up with a stop off for lunch and a winery or two - just ensure you nominate a designated driver if wineries are your style.

No matter how you decide to spend your time in Echuca, the city is undeniably a timeless Australian classic. The tranquillity of the river, the majestic heritage of the city and charming natural beauty all come together in this beautiful corner of the state. Whether you’re drawn to its history, pristine nature or simply seeking a country escape, Echuca has it all, and it’s out there for you to enjoy.

Fuel & Electrical Recharging Policy

Fuel is not included in your rental rate. Your vehicle will be provided with a full tank of fuel or if the tank is not full, we will provide you with credit for the missing fuel and you can decide how you wish to pay for the fuel you use during your rental. You have the following options:

Buy a full tank at the start …

  • Often referred to as our Fuel Purchase Option (FPO).
  • If you purchase a full tank of fuel from us at the start of your rental, you will not need to refill the tank before returning and will have nothing more to pay for fuel.
  • This is a good option for high kilometre journeys where you are likely to use a full tank.

Buy a half tank at the start….

  • It may be more convenient to pay for a half tank of fuel at the start of the rental and save time on refuelling by returning the vehicle with only a half a tank of fuel.
  • This is a good option for low kilometre journeys where you are more likely to use less fuel.
  •

FUEL PURCHASE OPTION (FPO)

We charge you at the start of your rental for a full tank of fuel at a price competitive with local fuel stations. You will have nothing more to pay to us for your fuel. Please note that we do not provide a refund for unused fuel.

HALF TANK OPTION

We charge you at the start of your rental for a half tank of fuel at a competitive price with local fuel stations and return with only half a tank of fuel. Please note that we do not provide a refund for unused fuel.

Return with a full tank …

  • Return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel purchased from a local fuel station.
  • This is a good option for low kilometre journeys.

IMPORTANT: Fuel gauges may still indicate that the tank is “full” many kilometres after it was last re-filled. To deal with this, we ask you to refill the tank within 15 km of the return location and bring your fuel receipt with you when returning the Vehicle. We ask you to present a copy of the fuel receipt to a Hertz employee or leave a copy in the Vehicle. If you do not do so, we reserve the right to apply a small charge – please ask at the counter for details.

…..or without refuelling

  • A good option if you are in a hurry, did not take FPO or a Half Tank of fuel and do not have time to refill the tank on return.

REFUELLING SERVICE CHARGE: We will charge you a price per litre to refill the tank. These prices are indicated on your Rental Agreement.

EV Battery Recharging Service Fee

You are liable for any reduction in battery charge percentage from when you picked up your EV to when you returned it (no refund will be provided if this figure is higher, upon return). If we are required to recharge the EV to return it to its battery departure level, we will charge you a price per kilo watt (kW), as detailed on your Rental Agreement.

EV Low Battery Recharging Service Fee

If you return the vehicle at 15% battery charge level or less, we will charge an additional recharging service fee, as detailed on your Rental Agreement.
