Driving In and Around Winchester

  • Braddock Autopark (22601) is open 24/7, close to Old Town Winchester and Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum.
  • George Washington Autopark (22601) is also open 24/7, with two in-lane pay stations. It’s close to Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum and City Hall.
  • Metered on-street parking can be found across Downtown Winchester, with free parking for your rental car on weekends and after 6pm. Time limits can vary up to four hours.

 

  • Interstate 81 (I-81) cuts through Winchester from West Virginia. It continues south-west between Shenandoah National Park and Monongahela National Forest, towards Roanoke. Renting a car makes it easier to travel Winchester with more independence.
  • US Route 50 (US 50) crosses east to west across the central states. It arrives in Winchester from the east, before branching off the I-81 into Washington DC.
  • US Route 522 (US 522) starts in Pennsylvania and continues south towards Virginia’s center. It crosses into Front Royal, where you can join Skyline Drive into Shenandoah National Park.

 

How to Get From Winchester to Sky Meadows State Park

It takes around 30 minutes to drive the 20 miles from our Jubal Early Plaza pick-up location to Sky Meadows State Park’s visitor parking lot:

  1. Leave the Winchester car rental parking lot on Plaza Drive.
  2. Turn right on to West Jubal Early Drive.
  3. Continue straight as it becomes the US 50 East.
  4. Follow the US 50 for around 17 miles, then turn right on to the US 17 South.
  5. Take the first right on to SR 710 and follow this road around to the parking lot.

 

How to Get From Winchester to Washington DC

The US capital is just an hour-and-a-half’s drive from Winchester. Hop in your car rental and leave the city on VA 7 East and follow the road for 36 miles. Then merge on to the VA 267 East Toll Road to join the I-66 into the city.
