Syracuse is a city that spends most of its time submerged under a rather thick blanket of snow, but this upstate New York city is boisterous, beautiful and easy to navigate, thanks to its proximity to several major highways. Syracuse Hancock International Airport is located right on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, and its center-of-the-state location means it's a quick drive to both New York City and Canada in your Syracuse rental car. A new partnership with Creative Food Group, a New York City concessions company, means that Syracuse Hancock is getting a major culinary overhaul – an alehouse, a retro burger shop and a French pastry shop are the newest additions, offering travelers a few new and unique options for chowing down before taking off. Here's what you'll find on your next trip to SYR.
SYR isn't the first airport to showcase artwork from the community, but it does find a new and creative way to do it. Local poets submit haikus about Syracuse and the surrounding area, and artists from Syracuse University illustrate the poems on a poster. The final products are showcased in kiosks all around the city, but they've got a home in the airport as well, where visitors can check out what makes Syracuse such a special place.
One thing you'll find at Syracuse that you won't see in many other places: Fancy, futuristic exit capsules meant to replace the security guards that usually stand at the airport exit. One last word of advice: This two-terminal airport may be small, but it's popular. Get here a couple hours early just to be safe.
