There are two indoor shopping centres in town called West Quay and The Marlands, both of which host top names in high street fashion. For a taste of independent stores and boutiques, visit Bedford Place and Oxford Street, which are crammed with coffee shops, restaurants and bars as well as wardrobe must-haves.
Learn about Southampton's rich history with a visit to its array of museums. Find out more about its monumental maritime past at the Sea City Museum; come and see over 900 years of local history and the city's life documented in one building at Tudor House and Garden; and celebrate Southampton's contribution to aviation technology at the Solent Sky Museum. Hire a car from Southampton International Airport, and take a trip into the New Forest National Park, an area of wilderness just 10 minutes away. Spanning some 219 square miles, this mass of woodland, heathland and waterways offers serenity and calm, alongside energetic outdoor pursuits, and is home to some of England's rarest indigenous species including the New Forest Pony.
