Driving in and around Leeds

A cosmopolitan place offering an abundance of stylish shopping opportunities, numerous top class bars and restaurants and renowned art galleries, Leeds is one of the UK’s finest cities. With tranquil countryside and outdoor spaces on its doorstep, as well as links to several other major cities, you won’t be short of things to do when you visit Leeds.

The major ring road that loops around the city makes it easy to navigate Leeds. The ring road uses traffic lights to manage congestion, which should give you more time to find your exit, and you’ll be able to access the places you really want to go. It’s worth noting that much of the center operates a one-way system, and there are dedicated lanes for buses and cyclists.

If you’re basing yourself in Leeds city center, you’ll find plenty of day trips within easy reach. Take the short, 15-minute drive along the A660 to the bohemian, laidback suburb of Headingley. Here you’ll find the world-famous Headingley Stadium, home to Leeds Rhinos rugby league club, sat next to the equally renowned cricket ground of the same name.

Take the A65 and from the center of the city it’s around 15minutestoKirkstall Abbey, amedievalCistercian abbey that sits on the banks of the River Aire.

Via the A58 you’ll find Roundhay Park. Walk through the 700 acres of tree-lined parkland, past sprawling natural lakes and discover this expansive park’s hidden gems. The Mansion – a grand stately building and Grade II listed – is a great spot to pause for lunch or coffee.

The city is ideally located right next to both the M62 and M1. Once you’ve explored Leeds, you can easily discover many of England’s other major northern cities, such as Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool .

When driving in the city center, the speed limit is generally 30mph, but this is usually clearly signposted for guidance. Once out on the motorways – the UK equivalent of highways – the limit is 70mph. Parking within the city is readily available, as the area features many multi--story parking lots.

A quick guide to Leeds

The distinctive culture of Leeds has underpinned its emergence as a popular destination that thrives as a proud symbol of Yorkshire life. Join the many visitors who flock to the museums, art galleries, music venues, shopping malls and national parks in and around Leeds every year.

Admire the architecture

Whether you’re looking to make a few purchases or just enjoy window shopping, the streets of Leeds are lined with popular high-street brands and world-renowned designer stores.

The city center is structurally appealing with stores, boutiques and restaurants forging a home in the Victorian-era buildings. As well as having everything you need within walking distance, Leeds combines a rich architectural heritage with modern design. Epic glass and metallic structures soar over rows of 19th-century buildings. The open-plan Trinity center and Victoria Gate contrast against the intricately detailed mosaics found in the Victoria Quarter, where you can pick up high-end designer brands.

With cobblestones under your feet, wander from the Trinity center to Victoria Gate where you’ll find even more clothing and technology stores nestled among independent and chain coffee shops. Immerse yourself city’s life as street performers pop up throughout the center of Leeds, filling the air with their jovial music and attracting the attention of the busy crowds.

A moment of peace

Take a break from the excitement of the city center and drive the short distance to Kirkstall Abbey. Home to monks for more than 400 years, it’s now one of the city’s proudest landmarks. Walk through the Gothic arches, brush your hands over the ancient stonework and explore the remains of a medieval Cistercian abbey.

Visit on a sunny afternoon for strolls around the surrounding green park in the sunshine or take a trip in the winter or fall for a different vibe. Spend time in the visitor center to learn more about the iconic history of this picture-perfect tree-lined setting alongside the River Aire.

Rub shoulders with local sports fans

The roaring crowds, the historic rivalries and even the half-time snacks – nothing beats the excitement of being at a sports game. Leeds is home to several stadiums and facilities, so if you’re up for a game of cricket, rugby or soccer, Leeds can accommodate it all.

Enjoy a rugby union club game with Leeds’ home team, Yorkshire Carnegie. Or alternatively, watch a rugby league match courtesy of the Leeds Rhinos in the vibrant Emerald Headingley Stadium.

If soccer’s your passion, and Leeds United are playing at home, head to Elland Road. You’ll hear and feel the exhilarating roar from Leeds supporters as you approach the famous ground. There’s an atmosphere here that’s one of the finest in the country. It’s an experience you won’t forget.

Car rental in Leeds allows you to experience the excitement of the city before heading out to discover the surrounding area and all it has to offer.
