The cities of Cologne and Bonn may be close in distance, but they are worlds apart in terms of atmosphere. Combine the two for your next vacation and they make a fascinating twin-city German break.
Make a pilgrimage to the cathedral
The iconic twin towers of the monumental Gothic cathedral have dominated Cologne’s skyline since they were completed in 1880. The Kölner Dom is the top billed attraction in the city and as soon as you stand outside and appreciate its might, you’llsee why.
Inside, don’t miss the sacred Shrine of the Three Kings, a lavish sarcophagus brought to the city from Milan in the 12th century that’s said to contain the bones of the kings that visited Jesus in Bethlehem. Once you’ve ticked that off, climb more than 500 steps to the top of the south tower and enjoy spectacular bird’s eye views of the city.
The square in front of the cathedral is the site of Cologne’s famous Christmas market, a magical event that begins on the last Monday before Advent and runs up to Christmas Eve. Hundreds of stalls sell all manner of toys, gifts and crafts and the air is filled with the wonderful aromas of baked goodies. Just what you need to get into the festive spirit.
From Roman artefacts to pop art
Cologne’s rich history is in evidence at the Romano-German Museum, which houses a vast array of artefacts dating back to when the Romans founded the city in the 1st century AD. The collection includes precious glass and complete floor mosaics from the Roman villa that once stood here.
Art fans should make their way to the fantastic Ludwig Museum. With a focus on contemporary pieces, this gallery boasts the largest collection of Pop Art outside of the U.S. You’ll also find hundreds of works by Picasso, as well as by Andy Warhol, George Segal and many other notable modern artists.
After visiting the cathedral and nearby museums, explore the cobbled alleyways of the Old Town, where colorful townhouses exude historic charm. Take a break at 150-year-old Malzmüle, one of Cologne’s traditional breweries (called ‘brauhaus’ in German), and savor a hearty meal – pork knuckle with slow cooked red cabbage, tasty schnitzel and pot roast all feature on the classic menu.
Compose yourself in Germany’s former capital
Bonn may be smaller than Cologne, but the former West German capital has an abundance of things to see and do, thanks to its old-world architecture and rich culture.
There’s only one place to start exploring and that’s at the Beethoven Haus. The famous composer was born here in 1770 and today his humble childhood home displays an array of scores, letters and instruments depicting his life in Bonn and Vienna. Bonn Minster, the city’s grand cathedral, is only a short stroll away, a vision of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Admire the landmark’s façade from Münsterplatz, the old town’s vibrant square.
If you’re visiting the city in spring, you’re in for a treat. Every year, cherry blossom trees lining the avenues of the old town come into bloom, creating a dreamy tunnel of pink. Don’t forget your camera – it’s an absolutely breathtaking sight.
Book car rental from Cologne Airport and make the most of your time in northern Germany, whether it’s the pleasures of Cologne or Bonn that beckon.
