Perched along the shores of the Mediterranean and sandwiched between its glamorous sisters Nice and Cannes, Antibes is a perfectly picturesque seaside resort. Head to the waterfront and you’ll notice huge boats cruising in and out of the harbor, evidence of how it has become one of Europe’s top yachting destinations. The crystal waters are truly alluring – watch the sun play on them and all will feel right in your world.
Culture by the sea
Established in the 4th century BC by the Greeks, Antibes’ heritage is ancient and deep rooted. Its history is best showcased by the old town, an atmospheric starting point for your vacation. Head through the thick medieval walls that fringe the district and you’ll find a labyrinth of streets, hidden cafes and independent boutiques.
Antibes’ beauty has long inspired artists from all around the world including Pablo Picasso, who painted many of his works here. Make sure you visit Château Grimaldi, where the famed artist worked and lived, which is now home to the Picasso Museum, packed with sea-inspired paintings, lithographs and ceramics.
With the château ticked off, saunter around the port in the direction of Fort Carré. This star-shaped stronghold presides over the town and has done so since the 16th century. Walk along its centuries-old ramparts and enjoy spectacular views out towards the Mediterranean.
Sink into the sand
While there’s much to see and do in Antibes, no vacation in the south of feels complete without a trip to the beach.
Plage de la Gravette is on Antibe’s doorstep, just below the old town. Sandy and sheltered, it’s the perfect spot to soak up the rays or take a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean. Plage des Ondes is a tiny sandy spot on the western side of Cap d’Antibes, quieter than Antibe’s urban beaches. The waters here are crystal clear, with a quirky tower sat near the shoreline.
More beautiful coastal retreats can be found along the French Riviera. One such place is Paloma Beach on Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, a shingle beach surrounded by lush greenery where Picasso once spent time with his family. Recharging your batteries is easy at this tranquil beach, but if you want to do something more energetic, indulge in an afternoon of water sports.
Make for Monaco
Monaco, the playground of the rich and famous, is close by. Once you arrive, take a tour of the mesmerizing marina where a number of yachts are moored. Wander past the world-famous Casino de Monte Carlo and admire its bello époque façade, before heading up to Le Rocher, Monaco’s medieval section.
Monaco’s luxurious companion Cannes is equally impressive. Go for a stroll along the La Croisette, a glitzy promenade flanked by designer boutiques and 5* hotels. Stop to drink in the views out towards the glistening sea and treat yourself to fine French cuisine at one of the superb restaurants tucked away in the old town.
Unlock a world of history and glamor when you rent a car in Antibes. With the coast on one side of you as you explore this sensational side of France, you’ll be in heaven.
