With a Stoke-on-Trent rental car it’s also possible to visit attractions nearby, including the beautiful landscapes of the Peak District.

Delve Into the Ceramics Capital

The pottery industry has been flourishing in Stoke-on-Trent since the 17th century and the city still exports ceramics around the world. You can learn all about its proud history at venues such as the Gladstone Museum, housed in a Victorian pottery factory where you’ll see traditional skills in action along with original workshops and kilns.

Hop in your Stoke-on-Trent rental car and head south-west to the World of Wedgwood. Here you can take a tour of the factory where iconic pieces such as the Borghese Vase are produced. Or you can visit the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, which boasts a hugely impressive collection of Staffordshire ceramics.

At the Potteries Museum you can also see the Staffordshire Hoard, the biggest collection of Anglo Saxon gold and silver ever discovered. It was found in a field in Staffordshire in 2009, and today hundreds of pieces are on display at the museum where you can learn all about the discovery and the fascinating history behind these objects.

Driving In and Around Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent’s central location in England means it enjoys excellent road connections to the surrounding towns, cities and countryside. So it stands to reason that getting around in a Stoke-on-Trent car rental is simple. The city is not far from the M6 motorway, a major highway that runs through the Midlands from the town of Rugby near Birmingham and continues to the North West past cities such as Liverpool and Manchester.

There are two major airports not far away from Stoke-on-Trent, with Manchester Airport less than 40 miles north along the M6 and Birmingham Airport just over 50 miles south along the same route.

If you’re driving your rental car in the center of Stoke-on-Trent, you’ll find that, like many other UK cities, it has a network of bus lanes that are off-limits to cars. These lanes are monitored by cameras so be mindful that you may face a fine if you cross into one.

When driving in the UK, remember that unlike most other parts of Europe you drive on the left-hand side of the road. The speed limit in most built-up areas is 30mph, unless there are signs to indicate otherwise, and this often falls to 20mph in areas close to schools or where there are lots of pedestrians.

The speed limit on UK motorways and divided highways – known here as dual carriageways – is 70mph. On main roads outside built-up areas the national speed limit (indicated by a light grey sign with a black diagonal line) is 60mph. Other limits can apply so be sure to keep an eye out for signs when driving your Stoke-on-Trent car rental.

To reach Birmingham, the UK’s ‘second city’ and home to a number of cultural venues, it’s just a 45-mile journey south along the M6 from Stoke-onTrent. The city of Manchester, famous for its musical heritage and nightlife as well as two world-famous soccer teams, is around an hour and 15 minutes north along the same route.

Stoke-on-Trent is also well placed for visiting the Peak District, a huge National Park spanning parts of several counties including Derbyshire and Staffordshire. It’s just a few miles north-east of the city, accessible via the A53. Remember to plan your journey accordingly to avoid traffic and other charges when traveling in your Stoke-on-Trent rental car.
