Guernsey has many attractions dating back to its occupation during the Second World War.
Remnants of this history can still be seen all over the island. La Vallette Underground Military Museum displays the past in tunnels built during the war, while the German Occupation Museum goes into further detail.
Even the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery has an exhibition on this dark period. Driving In and Around Guernsey
Renting a car is one of the most popular ways to explore the island of Guernsey, making it easy to glide from one corner to another.
A coastal circuit spans just 25 miles – but though the route can be completed in just one hour, you can spend weeks getting lost in the lush surroundings.
The island's maximum 35mph speed limit and common 25mph zones mean you’ll wind through the streets and country roads in your car rental at a leisurely pace regardless. As a patchwork of green fields stretch out before you, it pays to know the routes to the Channel Isle’s major attractions.
If you begin your journey at the airport, use Forest Road to venture north-east towards the capital city and major port. Castles, independent cinemas and the German Occupation Museum beckon.
En route, don’t skip the opportunity to see Jerbourg Kiosk – a jewel of the southern coast, with a history dating back to the Neolithic age and views of neighboring islands.
Driving north on Fort Road, you’ll pass many more incredible attractions in your Guernsey car rental. There’s a sculpture park near to Old Mill Triangle and stunning ancient bluebell forests overlooking the ocean.
Pass Fort George to reach St Peter Port – the compact capital city that is home to marvels like the Guernsey Tapestry Gallery, Castle Cornet and the Princess Royal Theater. First, though, you’ll reach La Vallette Underground Military Museum. Alongside the German Underground Hospital, this is one of many subterranean centers dating back to the occupation of Guernsey during World War Two.
Continue north to find beach resorts and historical forts. L’Ancresse Common is the island’s northernmost point and one of the best scenic spots around. As you skirt down towards the south, you’ll pass more picturesque places, including Portinfer Dunes Nature Reserve and a Victorian walled garden.
The south-west corner is home to another golden bay and the Fort Grey Maritime Museum.
Driving in Guernsey is done on the left-hand side of the road, as with the mainland UK. Most car parking is free – though ‘disc zones’ are common, requiring you to display a Parking Clock which can be purchased for a small fee.
