Aviation and Army Attractions

Farnborough is a paradise for plane lovers and people interested in military history. Bring the family to explore the air show and then tour the local attractions. It’s high-flying and action-packed.

This region has a rich aviation heritage, serving as a leading contributor to aeronautical science and arguably the best place for plane tourism in the United Kingdom.

The Farnborough Air Show is the highlight of the local calendar and attracts people from far and wide. It boasts four days of industry shows and public entry on Fridays. From the city center, get there by following Trenchard Way south in your Farnborough rental car.

Visit the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum to see vintage planes, including Harriers, Hawker Hunters and helicopters.

Continue the tour with a trip to the Aldershot Military Museum. Here, you can see British tanks, tour the military history gallery and see uniforms, badges and medals from wars of the past. Hop back in your rental car between exhibits to see Farnborough’s delights more efficiently.

Canals and Parks

Basingstoke Canal is a charming British waterway with regular boat cruises. It’s a great way to relax in the Farnborough area since the blissful, tree-lined canal stretches for 32 glorious miles. Park your rental car close to Frimley Lodge Park.

This green space beckons as a beautiful recreation space too, with something for every age group. There’s woodland, plus sport facilities, parks and a miniature railway. Barbecues are available for hire and you can even play a round of pitch and putt golf.

Saint Michael’s Abbey

Farnborough’s architectural treasure comes in the shape of an exquisite abbey. Here, liturgies are still sung in Latin and Gregorian chant by Benedictine monks. Inside lies the tomb of Empress Eugenie and many incredible treasures besides, including a magnificent imperial crypt.

Though the abbey is typically closed to the public, Farnborough’s monks nonetheless open the doors at certain times each weekend, when guided tours are available. See if you can catch a peek as you drive by in your rental car.

South Downs National Park

Southern England offers a green carpet of wonder which stretches across more than 1,000 square miles. The South Downs is widely considered southeast England’s most attractive area, and begs to be explored.

Woodland, nature reserves and historic houses pepper the land. Art lovers will also find great things to do in this area of natural beauty, with sculpture parks set in the wilderness.

You can even find castles, roman villas and a steam-powered fairground in the forest.

Thursley Nature Reserve is perhaps the best-protected stretch of countryside surrounding Farnborough, while Jane Austen’s House Museum sits to the south-west. Go Ape is an opportunity to explore the forest canopy in a unique way by climbing on high ropes and flying along zip wires – providing a fun family day out.

Driving In and Around Farnborough

Getting around in Farnborough is easy with a rental car.

The network of convenient roads makes it easy to navigate the town. The A331 is the major route that runs along the eastern edge – it connects to the A31 in the south and the M3 highway in the north. These roads make it simple to reach Southampton, Winchester and London.

Driving in the UK is on the left-hand side of the road, with speed limits typically ranging from 20mph or 30mph in built-up areas to 60mph on many rural roads and 70mph on British motorways. Always check signs as these can vary.

In the town itself, Farnborough Road is the main high street, where you’ll find live music venues, the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum and the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Center. There are plenty of parking lots and refueling stations for your rental car in this central zone.

Attractions are spread out around the town and wider region. Neighboring Aldershot is another important aviation town with a fascinating military museum. Just continue south on the A331 and exit onto the A323 to reach the center, which is flanked by a museum dedicated to telling the story of military history in the local community. When you rent a car in Farnborough, you can get there in just 10 minutes.

The military attractions don’t stop there – the Museum of Military Medicine is set in the countryside just east of Farnborough too.

The biennial airshow meanwhile is held every other July – on even years only – at Farnborough Airport. The event takes place at the show center on Etps Road, which can be accessed by turning onto Templer Avenue.

With Farnborough car rental, southern England is easy to explore at your own pace.
