Driving In and Around Birmingham

  • A4540, also known as the Middleway, is the city’s ring road. It has numerous thoroughfares leading directly to the city center.
  • A38(M) runs vertically through the city and links the center to the famed Spaghetti Junction. It’s the longest two-digit A road in England, running from Bodmin in Cornwall to Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.
  • A45 travels south-east from the city, connecting to A4114 and A4053 into Coventry and briefly merges with the M45 into Daventry.

 

How to Get From Birmingham Intl Airport to Birmingham

It takes just under 30 minutes to drive the 14.4 miles from our car rental lot at Birmingham Airport to the city center.

  1. Leave the car rental car park and head northeast towards Hermes Road, taking the third exit at the roundabout onto Airport Way.
  2. At the next roundabout, take the third exit onto the A45 slip road to Coventry.
  3. In 0.7 miles, use the left lane to take the M42 slip road to Birmingham N.E.C.
  4. At Bickenhill Interchange, take the second exit onto the M42 slip road to Tamworth.
  5. Keep right at the fork and merge onto M42, then take the M6 to Aston Express Way/A38.
  6. Continue and keep left to stay on St. Chad’s Queensway/A4400.
  7. Turn left onto Snow Hill Queensway, then turn left onto Temple Row West into the city center.

 

How to Get From Birmingham to Leicester

Leicester is a one hour and 15-minute drive from Birmingham in your car rental. Just head southwest on Temple Row towards Newhall Street and you’ll end up on Queensway/A38. From there, follow the M6 and M69 to A5460 in Leicestershire. Finally, continue on A5460 and head towards Vaughan Way/A594 into Leicester.
