Driving In and Around Belfast

The capital and epicenter of Northern Ireland, Belfast is relatively simple to navigate in your Belfast car rental. You’ll drive on the left-hand side of the road, passing on the right, and speed limits are marked in miles per hour. Freeways here are known as motorways, marked with the letter ‘M’, and there’s a wide network of A roads, which are major routes that link towns and cities.

Inside urban and built-up areas, the maximum speed limit is mostly 30 mph (dropping to 20 mph in school zones), increasing to 70 mph out on freeways.

The A55 runs around the outskirts of the city, granting you access to the suburbs or a neat way to circumvent Belfast. To reach the heart, take either the A24, A12 or A2.

There are plenty of parking lots for your holiday car rental in the city center in convenient locations close to main attractions. But bear in mind that some of the roads in the center of the city operate a one-way system and some of the main shopping streets have been pedestrianized.

You’re lucky – you’re just about to discover the beauty of Northern Ireland’s coastline. Follow the M2 and A26 to experience the magic of the Giant’s Causeway, the country’s most famous attraction. This age-old geological natural wonder is the focal point of the Causeway Coastal Route, which snakes from Belfast to Londonderry. This stretch is one of the best drives in Northern Ireland, with a plethora of mystical attractions, pristine beaches and lush valleys to see as you wind your way through it in your Belfast car rental.

With car rental in Belfast, you can explore all that this proud city has to offer before setting out to unlock the curiosities of the countryside and coastline.
