Dusseldorf is easily navigated in a car rental, with numerous highways leading into the city. With links to Germany’s wider autobahn network, the city also serves as a great starting point for travelling further afield – neighboring Cologne and Dortmund are within a few hours’ drive and both are worth spending a day or two exploring.

If you’re arriving at the airport, the city can be reached in around 30 minutes via the B8 highway. However, parking is limited within the city center apart from parking garages where payment is needed. For free parking, consider using the city’s Park and Ride in the outer suburbs.

Once you’ve explored all Dusseldorf has to offer, the historic city of Cologne is just over 45 minutes away via the A57 south. Or, football fans will be happy to know that Dortmund, home to the Borussia Dortmund football club, is only an hour’s drive via the A52 and A40 autobahns. When driving in Germany, it’s important to stick to the speed limits – even on the autobahn limits may apply. As a general reference, highways have a speed limit of 130km/h (80mph), while main roads are 100km/h (62mph). When driving through the cities or congested areas, this drops down to 50km/h (31mph).
